(Wednesday, February 23rd)
Final Score: LA Lakers 86, Portland 83
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Kobe Bryant poured in 31 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to an 86-83 victory over Portland at the Rose Garden.
Bryant made all 13 of his free-throw attempts for the Lakers, who made 18- of-20 shots from the charity stripe to earn their third straight win. Tierre Brown added 11 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting, while Lamar Odom pulled down 12 rebounds in the triumph.
Damon Stoudamire had 25 points for the Trail Blazers but hit just 9-of-24 field goal attempts. Shareef Abdur-Rahim, activated off the injured list prior to the game, netted 16 points in 27 minutes in his first action since January 2.
Joel Przybilla compiled 15 points and 10 rebounds to record his fourth straight double-double for Portland, which has dropped two straight and five of six.
Los Angeles trailed 58-51 midway through the third quarter before embarking on an 10-0 run to forge ahead. After Bryant fed Slava Medvedenko for an outside jumper that put the Lakers up 59-58 with three minutes left in the period, Chucky Atkins capped the run with a jump shot at the 1:35 mark.
The Blazers were down just 63-61 heading into the final quarter after Ruben Patterson's layup, but Brown made back-to-back buckets, the first a three- pointer, to extend Los Angeles' lead to seven.
The Lakers were up by nine with 5 1/2 minutes left before Stoudamire exploded for eight points in a one-minute stretch to bring Portland within 78-76. Bryant answered by hitting two free throws, then put together what turned out to be a key four-point play with 2:47 to go.
The All-Star was fouled after converting a layup and Blazers head coach Maurice Cheeks was assessed a technical on the play. Bryant would make both free throws for an 84-76 advantage.
Portland responded with seven straight points and got to within 84-83 when Stoudamire sank a triple with 21 seconds left. Bryant was immediately fouled and hit both shots and Stoudamire and Abdur-Rahim both misfired on three-point attempts in the final seconds.
Los Angeles opened up a 27-18 lead after one quarter and was up 35-22 with 6 1/2 minutes remaining in the half. The Blazers later closed out the second quarter with an 11-2 run, with seven points coming from Abdur-Rahim, to pull within 43-39 at the break.
