(Friday, January 21st)
Final Score: Minnesota 112, Seattle 107
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Wally Szczerbiak scored a season-high 34 points off the bench as the Minnesota Timberwolves ended a two-game skid with a 112-107 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
Szczerbiak shot 11-of-19 from the field, and added six rebounds and eight assists for the Timberwolves, who came out strong in this game and held on in the fourth quarter for a much-needed win. Kevin Garnett contributed 24 points, eight rebounds and seven helpers.
"This is the team we are chasing in our division and we know we had to win this one to catapult us," said Szczerbiak. "Hopefully, that's what will happen."
Seattle was paced by Ray Allen's 25 points, six rebounds and four assists. Luke Ridnour had a career-high 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting for the Sonics, losers of two in a row.
Minnesota led 100-85 with 7:47 left in the game. But the Sonics would rally, and closed within 111-107 with 1:47 left. But that was as close as they would get as the Timberwolves held on for victory. Szczerbiak had 13 in the fourth quarter.
Seattle held an 18-17 lead late in the first quarter, before the Timberwolves reeled off 14 straight points to grab a 31-18 lead with 10:31 left in the first half. Troy Hudson capped the burst with a 21-footer.
"We have been playing unintelligent for the past few weeks," said Hudson. "We have been playing good basketball for 3 1/2 quarters, then we fail to execute. Tonight we executed down the stretch, controlled the tempo, and won the game."
Minnesota led 62-51 at the intermission, and extended it to 12 points by the end of the third.
Seattle has lost back-to-back home games for the first time this season.
The Timberwolves were a scorching 58 percent from the field, including 10- of-17 from behind the arc.
The Sonics connected on 47 percent of their field goal attempts.
Minnesota's Latrell Sprewell started and played just 15 minutes in the game...T-Wolves' Sam Cassell missed the game with a hamstring injury...The road team has won five of the last six meetings in this series.
