In the third, Golden State grabbed a 72-69 lead on a Dale Davis dunk with 4:37 left, but a 9-0 run by the Lakers over the next three minutes built an six- point advantage, 78-72. Atkins' three-pointer with 1:32 remaining in the quarter capped the run and Los Angeles would later carry an 83-77 lead into the final 12 minutes.
The Warriors got within 83-79 early on, only to see the Lakers scored 14 of the next 21 points to pull away. Brian Grant's basket 1:43 into the frame started the run and Brian Cook's three-pointer 5:02 later ended it and gave Los Angeles a 97-86 cushion. Atkins had six points during the burst.
Golden State responded with a 13-4 run to get within 101-99 on a Richardson three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining. Atkins, however, hit 1-of-2 from the line with 16 seconds left and Richardson missed a reverse layup for the Warriors four seconds later and then fouled Odom, who hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it a two possession game with just 11 ticks on the clock and the Lakers got the win.
