Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki scored 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Dallas Mavericks to a 98-93 win over the New Jersey Nets at AmericaAirlines Center.
Nowitzki, who needs just two points to reach 10,000 for his career, was a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line.
For just the second time all season, all five starters for the Mavericks scored in double figures. Jerry Stackhouse finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds, Michael Finley had 16 points and Jason Terry had 15. Erick Dampier returned to action from a knee injury and scored 10 points while collecting 11 rebounds.
Nowitzki's double-double was his 18th of the season. Dampier's was his eighth, and Stackhouse's was his first as a Maverick.
"He can shoot the ball,we know that," said Stackhouse of Nowitzki. "When we get in a little lull like we did tonight, he's the guy we look to to make the big shot."
All five Nets starters scored in double figures as well. Vince Carter led the way with a game-high 29 points. Rodney Buford netted 18 points, Nenad Krstic scored 13 points, and Jason Collins had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Kidd recorded a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists.
Kidd's triple-double was the 61st of his career. It was his first triple- double in Dallas since 1996, when he was a member of the Mavericks.
The Nets cut the Mavericks led to three points with 42 seconds to go in the third quarter when Krstic drained a hook shot. Nowitzki hit a jumper as the quarter came to a close, and the Mavs led 62-59 entering the final frame.
Dallas took its largest lead of the night when Jason Terry nailed a three to make it 85-71 with 4:02 remaining in the game. Terry hit back-to-back three-pointers that capped off a decisive 14-1 run.
The Mavericks, who shot just 39.2 percent from the field on the night, jumped out to an 14-6 lead early on in the first quarter. They pushed their lead to 25-14 at the end of one.
A bucket by Buford dented the Mavericks' lead to three points at 32-29 with 4:51 to go in the first half. The Mavs held a 39-38 lead at the half, with Carter and Nowitzki each with 10 points entering the locker rooms.
Nowitzki missed the final five minutes of the second quarter, when he went to the locker room to have a sprained left ankle checked out. He returned after halftime.
"I could feel right away it wasn't that bad," said Nowitzki. "I came down a little awkward and walked it off."
