(Friday, February 11th)
Final Score: Boston 111, New York 94
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Ricky Davis scored 25 points and Paul Pierce added 17 to lead the Boston Celtics to a 111-94 win over the New York Knicks at the FleetCenter.
Raef LaFrentz recorded 15 points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who have won two in a row and five of six.
The Atlantic Division-leading Celtics improved to 26-25 this season, moving above the .500 mark for the first time since being 3-2 in the early stages of the season.
Stephon Marbury scored 31 points and 10 assists for the Knicks, who have lost two in a row and seven of eight. He became just the third player in franchise history to register five straight games of 30 or more points, joining Bernard King and Patrick Ewing.
Mike Sweetney had 19 points off the bench and Kurt Thomas tallied 16 points and 14 boards for New York, which had lost 18 of its last 21 games and remains in last place in the Atlantic Division.
Boston began to pull away in the third quarter. Leading 57-51 going into the quarter, the Celtics started the frame with a 19-5 burst. LaFrentz sparked the spurt with seven points and Mark Blount's layup with 4 1/2 minutes remaining ended it and gave Boston a 76-56 advantage.
The Celtics extended their cushion to 84-62 heading into the fourth quarter, as the club scored the final six points of the third.
New York, which scored only 11 third-quarter points, never threatened in the final 12 minutes and Boston cruised to its fourth straight win -- third this season -- over the Knicks.
"We played a terrific game," said Boston head coach Doc Rivers. "We shared the basketball and played good defense. I really don't have any complaints. I just wish I could give the second unit more time in games like this."
The Knicks, who have lost six of eight at the FleetCenter, led 29-25 at the end of one quarter. However, Boston outscored New York 23-22 in the second to take the lead for good. Davis' layup during an 8-0 run early in the stanza gave the Celtics a 35-33 edge and the club never looked back.
