NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Boston
(Friday, January 14th)
Final Score: Boston 106, Atlanta 94
Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Ricky Davis poured in 30 points to lead Boston to a 106-94 win over Atlanta at the FleetCenter.
Paul Pierce chipped in 21 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists for the Celtics, who won for just the second time in their last five contests. Gary Payton added 15 points and seven assists in the win.
"It was a win. I didn't think we played great," Boston head coach Doc Rivers said. "We played good in stretches."
Antoine Walker had 21 points, a game-high 17 boards and eight assists for the Hawks, who have dropped seven of their past eight games. Predrag Drobnjak scored 20 in the loss.
Boston led by four after three quarters, but opened the fourth with six straight points, capped by Davis' basket, to claim an 86-76 edge.
The margin grew to 11 points moments later, but the Hawks did close within 90-85 on Drobnjak's three-pointer midway through the period.
However, seven straight points by the home team extended the cushion back to double-digits and Atlanta did not have another comeback in it as it fell behind by as many as 17 points in the waning minutes.
"I thought when we cut it to five we had a legitimate shot, and then they hit a three and a two to drop it back to 10," Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson said. "We could never recover from that."
The Celtics jumped out to an 11-2 lead on Mark Blount's basket with around eight minutes left in the first period and extended the margin to 15 points on Al Jefferson's basket moments later.
The Celtics eventually held a 34-21 edge after one quarter and carried a 55-47 lead into the locker room.
Davis scored 16 points, while Walker pumped in 13 points and 10 boards for Atlanta in the opening 24 minutes.
The Hawks outscored Boston by four in the third period and trailed 80-76 after three quarters.
