Final Score: Houston 124, Dallas 114
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Tracy McGrady finished with 30 points and Juwan Howard scored a season-high 29 to lead the Houston Rockets to a surprising 124-114 victory over the Dallas Mavericks in an as-advertised offensive battle.
McGrady shot 12-of-19 from the field and was deadly from three-point land, hitting 6-of-8 shots. He also dished out a game-high 11 assists. Howard lit- up his former team, hitting 14-of-19 field-goal attempts. David Wesley had his best game as a Rocket with 21 points, while Yao Ming had 20. Bob Sura closed out the Rockets in double figures with 12.
"I was in one of those zones," said McGrady. "When I saw daylight, I was confident I was going to knock the shot down."
Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavs with 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting and was 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. Jerry Stackhouse had 26 points off the bench, hitting 10-of-11 from the line. Jason Terry netted 21 points in the loss and Shawn Bradley added 12. Michael Finley had 14 points, most of which came in garbage time, for Dallas, which had won five in a row coming in.
"I thought our defense let us down a little bit, but I'm not sure that it mattered that much," Dallas head coach Don Nelson said. "They were making every shot. They had a real good rhythm and flow to their game and we didn't."
Nowitzki had 11 of the Mavs first 22 points as the lead repeatedly changed throughout the first quarter. Dallas led 35-34 after one.
McGrady was hobbled in the second and left the game with 5:54 to go in the quarter to have his injured left big toe looked at.
A Finley jump shot allowed Dallas to build their biggest lead of the game, 52-43, with 4:45 to go in the half. McGrady would return to action seconds later after his toe was re-wrapped. He hit his first shot upon returning, which spelled bad news for the Dallas faithful.
The Mavericks led 61-57 at the break. Nowitzki had 16 at the half, while Yao had 13 to lead Houston.
Erick Dampier hit a jump shot to put the Mavs up 67-61 in the third, but the Rockets came flying back. Houston then went on an 11-2 run to take a 72-69 lead and forcing Mavs' coach Don Nelson to take a timeout. The Rockets closed out the quarter with a 12-6 run, taking a 94-85 lead into the final frame.
McGrady's toe seemed to be fine, as he had a monstrous dunk early in the fourth which put Houston up 98-90. He would follow with two-threes over the next 1:31, putting the Rockets up 11.
Houston led by as many as 15 points in the final period as the offense kept up down the stretch. The win snapped a five-game losing streak in Dallas for the Rockets.
