NBA Game Summary - Memphis at LA Lakers
(Monday, December 20th)
Final Score: Memphis 82, LA Lakers 72
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Shane Battier scored 17 points off the bench, Pau Gasol had 14 points with 11 rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies beat the Lakers for the first time ever in Los Angeles, 82-72, at the Staples Center.
Jason Williams added 12 points in the win, the Grizzlies' third straight overall and their first in 18 franchise games against the Lakers in LA.
Memphis shot just 37 percent from the floor, but the Lakers couldn't even match that. They scored a franchise-record-low 24 points in the second half after leading 48-44 after two quarters.
Caron Butler led LA with 16 points. Lamar Odom added 14 with 12 rebounds, Chris Mihm scored 13, but Kobe Bryant had just 11 on 2-of-16 shooting.
The late stats for the Lakers were nightmarish: 0-for-12 to end the game and just 3-of-29 in the final 20 1/2 minutes. Their point total was a season-low, and they shot just 32 percent from the floor.
It all started in the third quarter when the Lakers went without a field goal for a stretch of 8 minutes and 12 seconds. This allowed Memphis to turn a 56-51 deficit into a 66-60 lead.
Butler's dunk, which became a three-point play, ended the field goal drought and pulled LA within 66-63 with 20 seconds left in the period. But Battier drained a three-pointer at the buzzer to restore Memphis' six-point lead at 69-63.
The Lakers pulled within 69-66 on Brian Cook's three-pointer to open the fourth quarter, but they could never get closer than that. They were within 75-71 on two Bryant free throws inside the 4:00 mark, but Memphis followed with a 7-1 burst to pull away.
"The fourth quarter was so important to us," Memphis head coach Mike Fratello said. "We came up big defensively last night (in a 92-82 win over the Clippers) and we came up big defensively tonight."
The Lakers never trailed in the first half. Their biggest lead before the break was 10 points, at 24-14 after a Mihm bucket inside the 3:00 mark of the first quarter.
Memphis pulled within 26-22 heading into the second quarter, and never trailed by more than six points on the way to a 48-44 deficit at halftime.
LA shot 43 percent in the first half to Memphis' 40 percent. Battier led all players with 14 points in 18 minutes off the bench, and Mihm paced the Lakers with 11 points. Bryant was just 2-of-6 for four points in the half.
