Final Score: Portland 100, Atlanta 84
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph scored 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds while Darius Miles had 20 points to lead Portland to a 100-84 victory over Atlanta at Philips Arena.
Miles added eight rebounds and shot 10-of-13 from the field as the Trail Blazers stopped a five-game road losing streak and won for the first time in three games overall. Derek Anderson contributed 15 points and six assists for Portland, which had dropped five of seven coming in.
Rookie Josh Smith paced the Hawks with 14 points and five assists. Antoine Walker, Kenny Anderson and Tony Delk each finished with 13 points in the loss, Atlanta's fourth straight and fifth in six contests.
"We're a better team than 4-19, but it's not showing up right now," said Walker. "We're a long way from where we need to be."
The Hawks trailed 21-14 after one quarter of play but outscored Portland 15-4 to begin the second. Atlanta went ahead 24-23 on Kenny Anderson's three- pointer with 9:48 remaining before intermission and Delk ended the run with a jumper less than two minutes later which extended the lead to 29-23.
Atlanta held a four-point edge, 37-33, late in the first half before the Blazers reeled off 10 straight points to move back in front. After Portland took a 39-37 advantage on Derek Anderson's bucket at the 1:55 mark, Sebastian Telfair netted the final four points of the spurt to lengthen the margin to six heading into the final minute. Josh Childress then scored on a second- chance dunk to bring the Hawks within 43-39 at the break.
The Trail Blazers began to pull away midway through the third quarter, as Derek Anderson's three-point basket ignited a 10-0 flurry which put the visitors on top 66-54 with 4:35 left in the stanza.
"We just tried to stick with our game plan," said Miles about countering the Hawks' comeback effort. "And we really attacked when we got rebounds, tried to beat them downcourt and attack."
Portland held a 14-point lead before six consecutive Atlanta points, capped by Al Harrington's jumper with six seconds to go in the third, put the Hawks down 72-64 heading into the final 12 minutes.
Smith's layup with 8:18 remaining trimmed the Trail Blazers' advantage to 80-75. But the Hawks would go scoreless over the next 3 1/2 minutes to kill any comeback hopes. Portland answered with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a pair of baskets by Damon Stoudamire, to go up by 12 points with 6:11 to play and Atlanta never got to within nine the rest of the way.
"(Portland) got up on us early, then we came back and took the lead but couldn't hold it," said Atlanta's Jason Collier. "We couldn't put them away."
Portland roared out to a 17-7 lead over the game's first seven-plus minutes and kept a 10-point cushion as the first quarter drew to a close. However, Harrington made one of two free throws and Childress converted a layup to cut Atlanta's deficit to 21-14 at the conclusion of the period.
