(Monday, December 13th)
Final Score: Boston 134, LA Clippers 127 (2-OT)
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Gary Payton scored on a driving layup with 35 seconds remaining in double overtime to break a tie after Boston rallied from a 12-point fourth quarter deficit to post a thrilling 134-127 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers at the Staples Center.
Ricky Davis poured in 19 of his season-best 34 points in the fourth quarter to key the Celtics comeback. Paul Pierce delivered 33 points in just 27 minutes due to foul troubles for Boston, which ended a five-game road trip with back- to-back wins.
"That was one amazing basketball game," Celtics head coach Doc Rivers remarked. "Our guys really fought -- just a gut effort."
Corey Maggette had a career-high 38 points for the Clippers, who fell for the second straight time and have dropped three of their last four. Elton Brand racked up 24 points and 18 rebounds, while Bobby Simmons came through with 22 points in defeat.
Boston trailed 102-90 with under six minutes to play but put together a 11-1 run to get back into it. Pierce was hacked after converting a layup at the 4:13 mark and hit the subsequent bonus attempt to trim Los Angeles' lead to six. He would foul out less than one minute later. Davis capped the spurt by draining back-to-back jumpers, including a three-pointer which made the score 103-101 with just under four minutes remaining.
"Paul was on fire, and Ricky took it from there," Rivers said.
The Clippers regrouped and lengthened their advantage to 108-103 heading into the final minute, but Davis again scored consecutive buckets to get Boston to within one in the waning stages of regulation. Kerry Kittles was then fouled with 19 seconds left, but missed the second attempt to make it a two-point game.
Davis then drove to the hoop and drew a foul with eight seconds on the clock. He sank both shots from the line for a 109-109 tie which brought the first extra session.
Payton's three-pointer with 1:30 to go in the first overtime put Boston on top 114-113 and Tony Allen threw down a dunk on the Celtics' next possession for a three-point edge. Maggette then buried a straightaway long-distance attempt with 48 seconds remaining to force another additional period.
The Celtics went in front 125-120 on Jiri Welsch's three-pointer with 1:47 left in the second OT, but two Maggette foul shots and a trey by Kittles pulled Los Angeles back even with a minute to go.
Maggette was called for goaltending on Payton's drive to the basket on the following trip down the court, but Kittles swished an 18-footer with 44 seconds remaining to knot the contest once more.
Payton then went strong and put in a layup for the deciding points, and the Clippers were forced to foul after Maggette turned the ball over with 24 seconds to play. Davis sealed the win by making both shots from the charity stripe, then had a three-point play off a turnover with four seconds showing for the final margin.
The Clippers trailed 16-12 midway through the first quarter but outscored Boston 16-5 over a four-minute span to claim a 28-21 advantage with 1:42 to go in the period. Maggette and Brand each netted six points during the run.
Five straight points by Maggette put Los Angeles ahead 32-23 as the first quarter neared its conclusion, but Walter McCarty hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to six after the first 12 minutes.
The Clippers extended the margin to 44-32 five minutes into the second stanza before a jumper by Al Jefferson followed by Pierce's basket from beyond the arc trimmed Boston's deficit to seven. Chris Wilcox then sparked a 7-2 LA run with a three-point play as the hosts seized a 49-37 lead with 5:24 left before intermission.
Los Angeles maintained a double-digit cushion for most of the final five minutes of the second quarter and went into the break with a 62-52 cushion. Maggette finished the half with 21 points and Brand had 17.
The Clippers began the third quarter with consecutive baskets before Boston reeled off 10 straight points, the last six coming from Pierce, to close the gap to 66-62 with 7:26 to go in the period. However, the Celtics' star guard was forced to the bench after picking up his fifth foul less than two minutes later with Los Angeles up 72-64, and the visitors failed to make up any ground over the remainder of the quarter.
