Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Kobe Bryant had 37 points, 10 rebounds and five assists as the Los Angeles Lakers edged the crosstown rival Clippers, 89-87.

Lamar Odom chipped in with 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won five straight over the Clippers. The Clippers suffered just their second loss in eight games.

"I was pleased with the way we played," said Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy. "Kobe had a hot hand. We're getting closer."

The Clippers were paced by Corey Maggette's 27 points. Mikki Moore added 18 points and 14 rebounds.

The Lakers led 75-70 early in the fourth quarter. But the Clippers reeled off nine straight points, capped by a Bobby Simmons jumper with 8:50 left, to go up 79-75.

The Lakers answered with a 9-1 burst, led by seven from Bryant, to go back in front 84-80 with 4 1/2 minutes left in the contest. The Clippers crept within one on a Simmons three-pointer, but could not pull even with the Lakers.

The Clippers missed their final three shots, including the game's last, a Maggette runner that went in-and-out as time expired. His attempt would have sent the game into overtime.

"This was a very big win," said Lakers coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "The way the ball rolled around and came out at the end showed how close the game was."

The Clippers jumped out to a 30-23 lead after one quarter, while the Lakers rallied in the second to win it 30-19 and take a 53-49 advantage into the break. The Lakers brought a three-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers shot 20 foul shots in the contest and made them all.
