NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Denver

(Thursday, November 11th)

Final Score: Denver 117, Detroit 109

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony poured in 34 points before fouling out late, Earl Boykins became the shortest player in NBA history to score at least 30, and Denver held on for a 117-109 victory over Detroit at the Pepsi Center.

The 5-foot-5 Boykins ended with 32 points and six assists in 33 minutes off the bench for the Nuggets, who snapped a three-game losing streak to improve to 2-4 on the season. Andre Miller chipped in 14 points and six helpers.

"Obviously this was a much-needed win for us," said Denver coach Jeff Bzdelik.

Richard Hamilton scored 25 points to lead the Pistons, who had a two-game win streak halted. Carlos Delfino added 17 points off the bench and Chauncey Billups had 16 before leaving with a left ankle injury.

Denver was without forward Nene, who missed his fifth consecutive game with a strained hamstring. Nuggets forward Marcus Camby left the game in the first half, also with a strained hamstring.

The Pistons played without two-time defending Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace, who will miss one more game following the brain cancer death of his 61-year-old brother.

Denver led by as many as eight points in the first quarter after an 8-2 run, capped by Anthony's bucket inside the 3:00 mark, made it 21-13.

The Nuggets carried a 25-19 advantage into the second, and went ahead by as many as 14 when Anthony scored for a 45-31 margin with seven minutes remaining in the half. Detroit followed with a 10-0 burst to pull within 45-41, but trailed 55-47 heading into the break.

Denver used a 10-0 run near the end of the third quarter to take an 84-69 lead. Rodney White and DeMarr Johnson both hit three-pointer during the burst, with Johnson's giving the Nuggets their 15-point lead with 1:17 remaining in the quarter.

The Denver lead was 88-73 heading into the fourth, and it reached 20 when Anthony drained a three to make it 93-73 with 10:40 left in the game.

"Carmelo just played with a vengeance tonight," Bzdelik said.

But the Pistons chipped away at their deficit and pulled within four points at 104-100 on a pair of Tayshaun Prince free throws with 4:19 remaining. The Nuggets scored four straight after that, however, and went ahead 108-100 on Boykins' three at the 2:08 mark.

Detroit was within four with less than 20 seconds left, but free throws from Boykins and Greg Buckner sealed the win for Denver.
