New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Stephon Marbury scored a game-high 22 points and handed out nine assists as the New York Knicks defeated the New Orleans Hornets, 86-79, at New Orleans Arena.
Kurt Thomas had 16 and Nazr Mohammed each added 14, while Tim Thomas chipped in with 11 for the Knicks, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Lee Nailon and Dan Dickau each had 17 for the Hornets. David Wesley added 13 and P.J. Brown chipped in with 11 for the struggling Hornets, who have dropped eight in a row since their lone win of the year on November 22 against Utah.
Chris Anderson came off the bench to add 10 points with 12 boards in a losing cause as the Hornets fell to an NBA worst 1-16.
The Knicks owned a 26-17 cushion after 12 minutes of play. The margin would grow to 39-24 on Trevor Ariza's jumper with under seven minutes left in the first half. The lead would stay the same as both teams headed into the locker room with the Knicks owning a 47-32 cushion.
New York attempted to break the game open in the opening stages of the third.
Thomas drained back-to-back jumpers during a 19-10 flurry as the Knicks built a 66-42 lead with 5:27 left in the frame.
New Orleans, though, closed out the quarter with a 12-2 burst, trimming the margin to 68-54 heading into the fourth quarter. The Hornets proved pesky and continued to chip away at the lead, pulling within 83-73 after two free throws by Nailon with 1:35 left in the contest.
However, the Hornets never threatened from that point on as Jamal Crawford sank three-of-four free throws down the stretch to seal the game.
"We are just not hitting shots," said New Orleans head coach Byron Scott. "We are doing a pretty good job getting open shots and running the offense."
