Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Paul Pierce passed Larry Bird for second all- time on Boston's scoring list as he scored 15 points to go with nine assists and eight rebounds in a 94-84 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats at TD Garden on Tuesday.
"It was a relief. So much was hanging over me the last couple of days. Just hearing about it and knowing that you've got a game to play," said Pierce about passing Bird. "Just to be mentioned with him, with this organization, is a great honor."
Kevin Garnett led the Celtics with 22 points and Ray Allen chipped in 17. Rajon Rondo added a double-double with 10 points and 14 assists as the Celtics have won five straight and nine of their last ten.
The Bobcats were led by Reggie Williams' 21 points and got a season-high 20 points from Derrick Brown. Kemba Walker dropped in 16 points as the Bobcats lost their 12th straight game.
"When you have to play your main guys for as long as we do, it gets kind of tough," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said about the Bobcats' recent struggles. "We've just got to keep battling."
Needing just two points to tie Bird, Pierce sank a three-pointer from the wing to put him in sole possession of second place and put the Celtics up 48-40. Pierce now sits at 21,792 points for his career.
Allen ripped off the final 13 points of the quarter for the Celtics as they extended their lead to 69-62 going into the final stanza.
Boston started the fourth on a 13-2 run as it cruised to a double-digit victory over the visiting Bobcats.
Mickael Pietrus knocked down a three-pointer from the corner to give the Celtics a 27-22 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
The two teams combined for 15 turnovers and made just 3-of-19 shots from long range in a sloppy first half as the Celtics maintained a 45-38 advantage.
Host LA Lakers on Thursday, The Celtics will play their first of a back-to- back Thursday when they host the Lakers while Charlotte will try to right the ship at home against Chicago on Friday...Charlotte is now 1-14 on the road...The Celtics shot 17.4 percent from beyond the arc...Boston had 31 assists while the Bobcats managed 19.
