NBA Game Summary - Dallas at New Orleans

(Wednesday, March 9th)

Final Score: New Orleans 93, Dallas 92

New Orleans, LA (Sports Network) - Jarrett Jack, starting in place of the injured Chris Paul, made three free throws with 8.4 seconds remaining, as the New Orleans Hornets rallied past the Dallas Mavericks, 93-92.

Jack finished with 21 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the Hornets, who have won three of four. Marco Belinelli also had 21 points.

David West donated 16 points and 10 boards for New Orleans, which got 15 points from Carl Landry.

Paul missed his second consecutive game since suffering a concussion against Cleveland on Sunday.

"We're a blue-collar ball club," Jack said. "That's what coach preaches. Every day since I've been here, we take on his personality. We've got guys banged up. We had a tremendous effort by everybody. I cannot take all of the credit, even though I hit three big free throws. That's what this team is about."

Dirk Nowitzki ended with 26 points for the Mavericks, who have lost eight in a row in New Orleans. Tyson Chandler chipped in with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

J.J. Barea and Jason Terry added 12 and 10 points, respectively, for Dallas, which has lost two of three since an eight-game winning streak.

Trailing by seven, 92-85, with 1:13 to play, the Hornets scored the final eight points of the game to claim victory.

Belinelli sparked the surge with a three-pointer. Nowitzki turned the ball over at the other end, leading to Emeka Okafor's short jumper for a 92-90 game with 19.1 seconds remaining. Okafor was fouled on the play, but missed his free throw.

Chandler had a chance to extend Dallas' lead at the opposite end, but missed two foul shots. Jason Kidd then fouled Jack on a shot from beyond the arc. Jack made all three shots from the charity stripe to give the Hornets a 93-92 edge with 8.4 ticks to go.

Nowitzki missed an 18-foot jumper as time expired.

"We put them on the free throw line too much, especially at the last 1:13, and you know, we didn't make plays. You've got to make free throws," Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. "You've got to get stops. You've got to be able to get rebounds. And we didn't do it."

Neither team led by more than nine in the first half, which saw the Mavs take a 46-43 lead.

With the score tied at 52-52 with 7:40 remaining in the third, Dallas put together a 14-2 run. Chandler tallied nine points during the burst, which Brian Cardinal capped with a pair of free throws for a 64-54 margin with 4;13 left.

Terry's trey with 3.4 seconds remaining gave the Mavericks a 70-60 lead heading to the fourth.

Kidd made two free throws to give Dallas a 91-85 margin with 1 1/2 minutes to play. A skirmish along the bench led to West getting a technical foul. Nowitzki made the foul shot to make it a seven-point contest, but the Mavs failed to score the rest of the way.
