NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Toronto

(Monday, January 24th)

Final Score: Memphis 100, Toronto 98

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay hit a the game-winning fade away shot with 0.9 seconds left as Memphis edged Toronto, 100-98, at Air Canada Centre.

Gay finished with 21 points and seven rebounds for the Grizzles, who have won three straight, including the first two of a four-game road trip. Zach Randolph scored 17 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to set a franchise record with his 11th straight double-double.

Marc Gasol added 17 points and eight boards and O.J. Mayo came off the bench to score 15 and pull down five boards in the victory.

Andrea Bargnani posted 29 points for Toronto, which had its NBA record of 986 straight games with a three-pointer halted after going 0-for-13 from beyond the arc. The streak began on February 26, 1999.

DeMar DeRozan had 25 points and nine rebounds as the Raptors dropped their eighth straight contest. Jerryd Bayless had 15 points and 11 rebounds in the loss.

"We've played hard. With all the guys banged up, we've played pretty good basketball," said Toronto head coach Jay Triano, who was playing with only four reserves.

Mayo's breakaway layup capped an 8-2 run to open the fourth quarter that gave the visitors an 88-76 lead.

The Raptors responded with an 11-point burst to trim the lead to one with 5:13 to play. DeRozan ignited the surge with a short jumper and Bargnani's three- point play finished it.

Gasol ended Toronto's scoring barrage with two free throws on the ensuing trip down the court.

DeRozan then hit a spinning layup and drained two free throws to put Toronto up 92-91 with just under four minutes left to play.

Memphis clung to a 98-96 lead thanks to a Mike Conley jumper with 75 seconds to go. The Grizzlies then had a chance to put the game out of reach but Randolph's shot was off mark with 29 ticks left.

During the next possession, Bayless drove down the right side of the lane and netted an acrobatic floater to tie it at 98 with 18.9 seconds to go.

Gay's isolation shot from the baseline with 0.9 seconds showing on the clock sealed the win for Memphis.

"I got a good look at it," Gay said of the winning shot. "I just tried to hit a shot. I knew it was a tie game. It was just one shot. If we don't make it we go to overtime and I wanted to make sure there was no time left."

Mayo's three-pointer with 3:22 left started a 14-4 run to close the quarter and give Memphis a 25-24 lead after the first 12 minutes.

The Grizzles built their lead to six several times in the early part of the second stanza, including a 38-32 edge following a Tony Allen finger roll with seven minutes left. The Raptors scored the next five points, capped off by Julian Wright's reverse layup.

Randolph's pull-up jumper with 1.9 seconds left gave the Grizzles a 51-49 at intermission.

The third quarter opened with four ties in the first 3 1/2 minutes, but Gay nailed a trey to make it a 64-58 game nearing the midway point.

With just over a minute left in the period, Greivis Vasquez's floater handed Memphis a seven-point advantage. Gay drained a three-pointer with 4.9 ticks to go to put the Grizzlies in front 80-74 heading into the final frame.
