NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Washington
(Saturday, February 5th)
Final Score: Atlanta 99, Washington 92
Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Josh Smith totaled 29 points and a season- best 16 rebounds to lead Atlanta to a 99-92 win over reeling Washington at the Verizon Center.
Joe Johnson scored 21 points while Marvin Williams provided 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who have won three in a row and five of their last seven.
Atlanta won its 12th straight game over the hosts even without forward Al Horford, who did not play due to a sore back suffered in a fall following a hard foul from Blake Griffin in Friday's win over the Clippers.
"It was a little tough defensively, and sort of offensively," Johnson said of Horford's absence. "Smooth (Smith) picked up the slack and had an unbelievable game."
Nick Young scored 21 points and John Wall supplied 18 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Wizards, who have lost a season-high eight in a row.
"The coaches are doing a great job of setting us up and giving us a game plan," Wall said. "They can't go out there and play."
JaVale McGee's dunk and foul shot to complete a three-point play gave the Wizards their first lead of the night at 64-63 with 4:43 to go in the third quarter.
Down by two with less than four minutes to go, the Hawks closed the period with a 12-5 burst to take a 76-71 lead into the final stanza. Jamal Crawford scored the final six points of the run on a jumper and two layups.
Leading by three with eight minutes left, Atlanta got a pair of free throws from Smith and Williams and a Damien Wilkins dunk to extend the lead to nine with just over five minutes remaining.
Andray Blatche twice scored buckets to get the Wizards within five during the last three-plus minutes but the hosts could get no closer in falling for a 13th time in the last 14 meetings with the Hawks.
Atlanta led from start to finish in the opening quarter and took a 28-19 lead into the second behind nine points from Smith. The Wizards closed to within 18-15 before the Hawks ended the quarter on a 10-4 spurt.
A short Williams hook shot put the Hawks ahead 34-21 with 9 1/2 minutes left until the break before the Wizards put together a 12-2 spurt to trim the lead to 36-33 three minutes later.
Two Johnson foul shots in the final three seconds gave the visitors a 52-46 edge at the intermission.
