"They made big shots, they made big plays. We just played a little lackadaisical," Bryant said.
Trailing by one, 71-70, with 5:34 to play, the Jazz went on a 12-6 run to go in front. Derrick Favors tallied five points during the burst, which Earl Watson capped with a three-pointer for an 82-77 edge with 2:39 left.
After each team exchanged baskets, Bryant made a three-pointer from the corner to cut Los Angeles' deficit to 84-82 with 1:18 remaining. Bryant then forced an offensive foul on Hayward, but Bryant missed a shot from beyond the arc.
Favors made 1-of-2 from the line to make it a three-point contest with 32.3 seconds to go. Bryant drained a trey from the top of the arc at the other end to tie the game.
Hayward was fouled by Bryant and made 1-of-2 from the charity stripe to give Utah an 86-85 margin with six ticks left on the clock.
Bryant lost control of the ball in the final seconds to seal the Lakers' fate.
"It was fun. You're out there competing and especially against Kobe Bryant, growing up, you idolize him. It was a lot of fun," Hayward said.
The Lakers never led by more than 10 in the first half and took a 40-34 lead into the locker room.
Millsap scored the first six points of the third quarter to tie the game. The remainder of the frame was tight and it ended in a 57-57 tie.
