NBA Game Summary - Toronto at Utah
(Wednesday, November 3rd)
Final Score: Utah 125, Toronto 108
Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Deron Williams controlled the game with 22 points, 14 assists and eight rebounds, and the Utah Jazz routed the Toronto Raptors, 125-108, at EnergySolutions Arena.
Al Jefferson added 27 points on 12-of-20 shooting for the Jazz, who continued to dominate the Raptors, winning their 11th straight over them since 2005. C.J. Miles contributed with 19 points off the bench, and Paul Millsap had 21 for the victors.
"It's defense. We get stops, we run, and get easy baskets," Jefferson said. "It proved in the third quarter when we stopped getting stops, stopped getting easy baskets, they came back. So when we started back getting stops, the baskets came. I think that's the whole key to it."
Andrea Bargnani scored 26 points and pulled down nine rebounds for the Raptors, who have lost three of four to begin their season. Sonny Weems had 23 points, while DeMar DeRozan and Jarrett Jack had 16 and 14, respectively, in defeat.
Toronto trailed by 19 to begin the second half, but made a game of it.
Jefferson's layup put Utah ahead, 72-53, just over two minutes into the third, but the Raptors scored 14 of the next 16 points -- six by Jack, whose two free throws cut the deficit to 74-67 midway through the period.
The Jazz held an 81-73 advantage following two Raja Bell free throws with 3 1/2 minutes until the fourth, but a 7-0 burst brought Toronto to within a point on a pair from the line by Weems with just over two minutes left.
The hosts never surrendered the lead and finished the third on a 10-4 burst to grab a 91-84 cushion heading into the fourth after Miles' deep three off the glass at the buzzer.
Miles hit another three to begin the fourth, and Utah's lead never dipped below nine the rest of the way.
The Jazz began the contest on a 15-2 run, and Williams scored 14 overall in the opening quarter, as Utah took a commanding 41-22 lead.
"I don't know what the cause (of the slow start) was, but that was definitely a big thing in the game," Bargnani said. "You can't afford to start like that especially against a team like Utah who plays great together."
The two teams played even in the second quarter, with each team scoring 25 for a 66-47 halftime score.
Utah has dominated the all-time series between the two franchises, 22-7...The Jazz shot 7-of-16 from three-point range -- 5-for-6 by Miles -- while Toronto shot 3-for-13 from beyond the arc...Utah recorded 64 points in the paint, compared to only 46 for the Raptors.
