NBA Game Summary - Utah at Denver

(Wednesday, October 27th)

Final Score: Denver 110, Utah 88

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored 23 points and added seven rebounds, leading the Denver Nuggets in a dominating 110-88 win over the Utah Jazz in the teams' season-opener.

The game was a rematch of a first-round playoff series from last season, which Utah won in six games. But the Nuggets came out on top Wednesday thanks to 22 points from Arron Afflalo, along with 16 rebounds and eight points from Shelden Williams.

Denver also played with head coach George Karl back on the bench. Karl missed the end of last season as he battled neck and throat cancer.

"I was more anxious, probably," Karl said. "More anxious to get back, more anxious to get the season started."

Deron Williams had a team-high 17 points, but sat on the bench during the fourth quarter -- along with the other Jazz starters -- after Denver had built a large lead.

Paul Millsap had 15 points and eight boards in the loss.

"I just don't think we played hard enough," Williams said. "I said our timing was off on offense and we gave up too many points on defense. Not going to win many ballgames like that."

Denver scored the game's first nine points and never trailed. The Nuggets briefly established a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but took a 29-20 lead into the second quarter after Chauncey Billups made two foul shots with 3.6 seconds left.

The Jazz made just five of their 18 field goals in the opening stanza, but somewhat compensated for that by making 9-of-11 free throws. Denver did not shoot especially well in the first quarter, but got hot in the second.

With the Nuggets already ahead by eight, Nene bookended a six-point burst with a pair of finger roll layups, boosting the lead to 40-26. Denver continued to stretch the advantage, as Afflalo's three-point play made it a 45-28 game with 5:25 on the clock.

The Nuggets then scored the final six points of the half -- on two buckets from Anthony and two free throws from Billups -- to take a 60-40 lead into the break.

Utah committed 10 turnovers in the second quarter, leading to 13 Denver points.

The hosts' lead got as high as 27 in the third quarter, and they led by an 86-65 margin moving to the fourth, then cruised down the stretch as the Jazz reserves took over.
