Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 of his 28 points after halftime and guided Dallas to a 106-102 overtime win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
Jason Terry netted 29 points for the Mavericks, who posted their 10th straight season with at least 50 victories. Jason Kidd chipped in 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists, as the Mavs continue to hold onto the second spot in the Western Conference.
Caron Butler contributed 11 points and 13 rebounds for Dallas, which won its third straight game. The Mavs rallied from a 13-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
"I think our defense was phenomenal in the second half," Nowitzki said. "Energy was great, but we needed a little spark offensively and I was able to get going. That was great."
O.J. Mayo led Memphis with 27 points, but missed the potential tying three- pointer in the final seconds of overtime. Mike Conley added 25 points, while Zach Randolph ended with 24 points and 12 boards before fouling out, as the Grizzlies dropped their third in a row, the last two coming in overtime.
Memphis, which fell at Milwaukee on Sunday, was dealt a severe blow to its playoff chances. The Grizzlies are seven games behind San Antonio for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Both teams have just eight games left.
"This year we progressed a lot as a team. Next year we wouldn't expect anything less than the playoffs," Memphis forward Rudy Gay said.
Conley's jumper extended Memphis to an 88-75 lead with 4:25 left in the fourth, but the Mavs then surged for the next 13 points, tying it at 88 on a Nowitzki three-ball with 1:20 left, his second straight make from long distance.
After a Conley jumper, Nowitzki hit a fade-away shot with 45.9 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 90, ultimately forcing OT.
The Grizzlies had their chances to win at the end of regulation, but they missed four shots. Randolph was off the mark on a layup and a tip-in. Darrell Arthur got the offensive rebound, but Gay missed a three-point shot. Memphis then won a jump ball with 19.1 seconds left, but Mayo couldn't get a desperation shot to fall at the buzzer.
Nowitzki then scored six points in the overtime, thanks mostly to a 4-of-4 effort from the foul line.
Kidd provided a spark by nailing a three-pointer for a 97-92 lead, but Memphis closed within one on three occasions, the final time at 103-102 on a pair of Randolph free throws with 9.7 seconds left. Nowitzki made two from the charity stripe, but Mayo couldn't connect from long distance.
Shawn Marion made one foul shot with 3.4 seconds left to seal the victory.
Memphis raced to a 20-8 lead and claimed a 27-22 lead after one quarter. Dallas went ahead early in the second, but the teams headed to the locker room tied at 50. The Grizzlies opened the third on a 17-4 burst, capped by a Mayo three-pointer. Memphis led, 73-67, moving to the fourth.
