NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at Detroit
(Sunday, November 29th)
Final Score: Detroit 94, Atlanta 88
Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Rodney Stuckey scored 23 points and dished out eight assists, as the Detroit Pistons snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 94-88 win over the Atlanta Hawks at The Palace of Auburn Hills.
Will Bynum donated 19 points off the bench, while Charlie Villanueva went for 13 points and six rebounds for Detroit, which dropped a 104-96 decision to the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. Villanueva left early in the fourth quarter with bloody nose.
"Good win," Pistons head coach John Kuester said. "You're playing one of the premier teams in the East. Atlanta is outstanding, well-coached, outstanding athletes. Our guys came in and were focused, understood that we'd been in a tough (injury) situation but we didn't lose focus in what we wanted to accomplish during the period."
Ben Wallace turned in a solid performance with a game-best 18 rebounds and 10 points. Jonas Jerebko finished with 10 points and 11 boards.
"When you get beat 53 to 27 on the boards you aren't going to beat many teams in this league, no matter what level you play it," Hawks head coach Mike Woodson said. "We just didn't compete today and they out-worked us from a defensive standpoint and we just couldn't rebound with them. Ben Wallace was the difference today."
Josh Smith had 23 points and seven boards for the Hawks, who were coming off a 100-86 win at Philadelphia on Friday. Atlanta has lost three of the last four after winning the previous seven. Jamal Crawford chipped in with 20 points and Mike Bibby added 13. Al Horford contributed a double-double with 10 points and as many rebounds.
Crawford's fadeaway jumper to open the fourth quarter tied the game at 67. Bynum's basket and Villanueva's hook shot and a pair of free throws put the Pistons up 73-67 with 9 1/2 minutes remaining. Villanueva was injured when he appeared to take an inadvertent shot to the nose on the way to the basket and left after both makes.
Bynum's three-point play increased Detroit's lead to 10, 82-72, with 5:51 to play. Bibby's triple with about a half-minute left got Atlanta to within 90-88, but the Pistons made their free throws in the closing seconds to prevail.
Detroit held a slim 27-25 lead after the first quarter, then Wallace's layup started a 6-0 Pistons run to begin the second and they were up 41-32 following another Wallace lay-in at the midway point.
After Atlanta went up by a point at the three-minute mark, Villanueva's jumper ignited a 12-3 burst and Detroit was ahead 55-47 at the break.
The Pistons went up by double-figures, 65-55, after a Wallace layup midway through the third, but the Hawks closed the quarter with a 10-2 burst and trailed by two after three periods.
The Pistons were without Richard Hamilton (ankle), Tayshaun Prince (back) and Ben Gordon (ankle)...Atlanta won all three meetings with the Pistons last season, but have lost nine of its last 11 trips to Detroit.
