NBA Game Summary - Sacramento at Memphis
(Monday, November 23rd)
Final Score: Memphis 116, Sacramento 105
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds, and the Memphis Grizzlies got back to their winning ways with a 116-105 win over the Sacramento Kings.
O.J. Mayo added 20 points thanks to a 10-for-10 effort from the free throw line, while Marc Gasol contributed 18 points for the Grizzlies, who have won four of five overall. Zach Randolph checked in with 16 points, while Mike Conley had 11 and seven assists, as each Memphis starter scored in double- figures.
"It all comes from defense," said Gasol. "When we play better defense we communicate better and we turn that into offense. In offense it's hitting the open man and getting the best shot every time."
Tyreke Evans scored a game-high 28 to tie a Sacramento franchise rookie record for consecutive games with 20 or more points (seven), although the Kings lost their fourth straight following a four-game winning streak. Sergio Rodriguez had 16 points and seven assists off the bench, while Omri Casspi provided 15 points in the setback.
Both teams were turnover-prone, as the Kings committed 21 turnovers compared to 17 for the Grizzlies.
"If we can't throw the ball to our team it's going to be a long year," said Kings coach Paul Westphal. "We started the game turning the ball over and kept it up for most of the first three quarters. We couldn't get anything going because our ball-handling was so atrocious."
Randolph led a balanced scoring attack in the first quarter with eight points, and Memphis held a 25-18 lead heading to the second quarter.
The Grizzlies led by as many as 14 in the second quarter, and the hosts led by 10, 60-50, at halftime.
The third quarter went back-and-forth early, with the Kings cutting their deficit to nine on a Jason Thompson dunk with 8:22 left. The Grizzlies, though, proceeded to go on a 21-9 burst that began with a Gay layup just seconds later.
A Gasol dunk with 4:06 on the clock made it a 17-point game, 78-61, and Gay's slam just over a minute later provided an 84-63 lead. Memphis led, 86-69, after the third quarter ended.
The Grizzlies led by double-digits for the first 11 minutes of the fourth, until a Rodriguez three-pointer made it a 114-105 game with 48.9 seconds left. Memphis, though, answered with a pair of Gay free throws to seal the outcome.
Donte Green scored 11 for the Kings, while Andres Nocioni had 10 points...Sam Young and DeMarre Carroll each had eight points for Memphis...Casspi was ejected in the fourth quarter after picking up his second technical foul.
