NBA Game Summary - Charlotte at Denver
(Monday, January 25th)
Final Score: Denver 104, Charlotte 93
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Arron Afflalo made a personal-best 6-of-7 three- pointers to tie a career high with 24 points, as the Denver Nuggets handled the Charlotte Bobcats, 104-93, at the Pepsi Center.
Afflalo also dished out seven assists for the Nuggets, who were without All- Star forward Carmelo Anthony due to a sprained ankle. Chauncey Billups tallied 27 points, 11 assists, and six rebounds. Nene had 17 points, five rebounds, and four steals, while J.R. Smith added 12 points and six boards off the bench for Denver, which has won seven in a row and eight straight as the host.
"I'm just trying to find a good rhythm shooting, and I got to thank my teammates for that," Afflalo said. "They're doing a lot of creating of the plays, and I'm just standing there trying to make shots."
Stephen Jackson ended with 22 points for the Bobcats, who have dropped three straight following a six-game winning streak. Gerald Wallace finished with 20 points and seven rebounds. Flip Murray and Boris Diaw each had 13 points and five rebounds for Charlotte, which started a six-game western road trip on Monday.
"I'm not real happy. We're just not playing together on both ends," said Charlotte head coach Larry Brown. "Chauncey was great, we didn't have an answer for Nene. Afflalo made shots, they got it to the open man. They played great, it was like they were scripting plays."
The Nuggets held a 29-26 edge following a back-and-forth first quarter. Denver led by as many as nine in the second before taking a 56-52 margin into the locker room.
Ahead 64-61 four minutes into the third, the Nuggets went on a 13-4 run to create some breathing room. Joey Graham capped the burst with a pair of layups to make it a 77-65 contest with four minutes left. The score was 84-73 after three periods.
Denver started the fourth on a small 7-2 spurt to expand its lead. Smith's deuce had the Nuggets in front 91-75 with 8 1/2 minutes to play.
The Bobcats put together an 11-3 flurry near the end of the fourth. Derrick Brown's long jumper made it 101-91 with 1 1/2 minutes remaining, but Afflalo drained a three-pointer at the other end to spoil any hopes of a comeback.
Charlotte defeated Denver, 107-95, on December 8 this season at home, but the Nuggets have won eight of the past 11 encounters in this series. The Bobcats have lost three straight and five of the six meetings in the Rockies.
