NBA Game Summary - Toronto at Atlanta

(Friday, April 9th)

Final Score: Atlanta 107, Toronto 101

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Jamal Crawford finished with 25 points to lead a balanced attack, as the Atlanta Hawks got back on track with a 107-101 victory over the Toronto Raptors.

Josh Smith had 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for the Hawks, who had dropped their last two but used a 27-of-30 performance from the foul line Friday to take the win. It was Atlanta's 50th victory of the season, a milestone the team hadn't reached since 1997-98.

The win also put the Hawks into sole possession of third place in the Eastern Conference, a game ahead of Boston, which lost to Washington on Friday.

"It feels good," Smith said. "When we first started out, the goal was to win 50-plus games. Some people laughed, it really didn't matter. We knew that we had the talent in order to make 50-plus wins."

Joe Johnson added 18 points and seven assists in the win, while Al Horford had 15 rebounds to go with 12 points. The Hawks had 45 points in the second quarter.

Sonny Weems and Amir Johnson had 18 points each for the Raptors, who remained tied with Chicago for the eighth spot in the East after the Bulls lost to New Jersey in double-overtime on Friday.

Minus Chris Bosh, who suffered a facial fracture Tuesday against the Cavaliers, Toronto continued to slide, losing its fourth straight. Hedo Turkoglu, who suffered a nasal fracture Wednesday against Boston, played Friday with a facemask and finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Toronto ended the first quarter on a nine-point run to take a 25-14 lead, and the Raptors continued to lead in the second frame. But the Hawks stayed close, and Mike Bibby hit a three midway through to even the contest at 38-38.

Atlanta forged ahead moments later, then scored 14 of the half's final 18 points to gain a 59-47 advantage at the break.

"Second quarter we forced them to miss shots and they run and get it," said Toronto head coach Jay Triano. "I think two of them were three-pointers and 13 second-chance points in the second quarter and that was the difference. You can't give this team second opportunities. We just didn't box out. I wish I could say it was one guy. That was our downfall."

The 45-22 difference in the second quarter was a gigantic swing for the Hawks, who led by as many as 17 in the third quarter before Toronto got within 81-73 moving to the fourth.

Weems opened the final frame with a jumper to get the Raptors within six, though the Hawks responded with a 15-1 run. Zaza Pachulia ended the rally with a jumper for a 96-76 advantage with a little over eight minutes left.

Shortly thereafter, Toronto ran off nine consecutive points to start coming back. A six-point run later in the quarter got the Raptors even closer, as Turkoglu ended the burst with a jumper to make it a 102-95 game with 2:07 left.

However, neither team scored for the next minute-plus, and Crawford sank four foul shots in the final minute to help seal the win.
