NBA Game Summary - Boston at Phoenix
(Wednesday, December 30th)
Final Score: Phoenix 116, Boston 98
Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Channing Frye and Amare Stoudemire each scored 26 points, leading the Phoenix Suns past the struggling Boston Celtics, 116-98.
Frye sank six three-pointers and also had 10 rebounds, while Leandro Barbosa scored 17 off the bench for the Suns, who were coming off a home win over the Lakers on Monday. Wednesday's victory improved Phoenix's home record to 13-2. The Suns are the only team in the NBA to beat both the Lakers and Celtics this season.
Eddie House led six Celtics players in double figures with 19 points, while Ray Allen added 15. Boston, playing without Kevin Garnett because of his sore right knee, fell to its season-high third straight loss.
"It's a win over the Celtics. I mean, we'll take it," Suns head coach Alvin Gentry said. "As I said to someone, they don't really put an asterisk by it and say Kevin Garnett wasn't here. So we'll take it any way we can get it."
Stoudemire was dominant in the opening quarter, making 9-of-10 shots and finishing with 18 points, nearly outscoring Boston himself. Phoenix shot 14- of-25 in the first overall, and held a 30-20 lead moving to the second.
The Suns maintained the double-digit lead at halftime, 61-49.
Boston was within single digits a few times in the third quarter, including when Rasheed Wallace's jumper got the Celtics within 64-55 with eight minutes to go. But Jason Richardson followed with a layup to spark a 13-2 run that he ended with a jumper to make it a 77-57 contest.
"I didn't like the way we started the first six minutes of the game," Celtics head coach Doc Rivers said. "I told our guys I thought we didn't have that thought in our mind. Then I thought we actually competed from there. And we just couldn't get shots to fall. And when you're down on your luck with injuries and your other guys can't make shots they usually make, you're probably going to lose the game."
Phoenix was ahead 90-73 going to the final frame, and continued to shoot well to secure the victory. Two Barbosa foul shots with 6:11 to play put the Suns in front 106-83, and they cruised from there.
The Celtics were also without Paul Pierce (arthroscopic knee surgery) and forward Glen Davis (ankle)...Rajon Rondo had 13 points and eight assists for Boston, while Kendrick Perkins added 13 points and seven boards. Shelden Williams and Tony Allen scored 14 and 12, respectively...Richardson finished with 12 points for the Suns, who got 11 points and eight assists from Steve Nash...The Celtics ended their four-game road trip 1-3, and host Toronto on Saturday...The Suns swept the two-game season series with Boston, having also won on November 6.
