(Wednesday, November 18th)
Final Score: Dallas 99, San Antonio 94 (OT)
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Dirk Nowitzki scored 11 of his season-high 41 points in overtime, as the Dallas Mavericks edged the San Antonio Spurs, 99-94, at American Airlines Center.
Nowitzki also pulled down 12 rebounds for the Mavericks, who were coming off a 115-113 overtime win against the Bucks on Monday. Nowitzki sank the winning jumper in that game.
Drew Gooden added 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jason Terry ended with 13 points for Dallas, which has won four in a row.
The Mavs were without Josh Howard (ankle), Shawn Marion (ankle), and Erick Dampier (illness).
"He's playing great basketball and think he's one of the top guys right now in the league and he's really playing at I high level. We need that because of all the injuries we have right now and he's doing everything he can to carry this team," Gooden said of Nowitzki.
Tim Duncan tallied 22 points, 14 rebounds, and six assists for the Spurs, who dropped to 0-4 as the visitor this year. George Hill scored 15 points while Richard Jefferson finished with 13 points and 11 boards for San Antonio, which was without guard Tony Parker (ankle).
"Both teams were physical and it is always a good rivalry when these two teams play. Down the stretch and in overtime they made some shots and did a good job," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
Down 89-86 early in overtime, Nowitzki propelled the Mavericks to a 11-2 run. He had a pair of three-points plays before Terry made a jumper. Nowitzki then capped the flurry with a shot from beyond the arc for a 97-91 lead with 1:15 remaining.
A Hill three-pointer and a pair of Nowitzki foul shots accounted for the final margin.
With the score tied at 80, Gooden made a driving layup to put Dallas ahead two with 1:58 to play in regulation.
A pair of Duncan foul shots tied things up with 30.1 seconds to go. At the other end, Nowitzki's tip-in off a Terry missed jumper put Dallas ahead 84-82 with 14.6 ticks left.
Duncan responded at the opposite end of the floor with a layup to deadlock the contest with 2.3 seconds remaining. Duncan then blocked Terry's jumper to send the contest into overtime.
The Spurs led 21-19 after 12 minutes, but the Mavericks used a 12-1 run early in the second to take the lead. Terry's jumper capped the spurt and gave San Antonio a 33-26 margin with over 5 1/2 minutes left.
Keith Bogans made 2-of-3 from the line before the half to cut the Spurs' deficit to 37-35.
San Antonio held a 59-57 edge late in the third, but the Mavs scored the final six points of the period to go ahead 63-59.
