NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Orlando
(Sunday, April 4th)
Final Score: Orlando 107, Memphis 92
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Vince Carter scored 26 points to pace Orlando to a 107-92 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies in a contest marred by an on- court shoving match.
Rashard Lewis and Jameer Nelson each added 18 points for the Magic, who are closing in on the Southeast Division title. They are 4 1/2 games ahead of Atlanta, which has just six games remaining. The Magic have five contests left.
J.J. Redick tallied 15 points as Orlando posted its seventh victory in nine games.
Zach Randolph had 24 points, 18 rebounds and four steals for the Grizzlies, who faltered to their fourth defeat in five contests.
A total of six technical fouls were called in the game. Orlando's Matt Barnes and Memphis' Hasheem Thabeet got into a shoving match with 6:54 left in the third quarter. It came after Barnes was called for an offensive foul for pushing off Thabeet. Barnes bumped into Thabeet, who then retaliated with a push and the scuffle escalated from there and involved nearly 10 players.
"He started to run over to the official and complain and Thabeet pushed him and then Matt sort of lost it," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "And then everybody was involved. At least the benches didn't empty, no punches were thrown. I don't see suspensions coming or anything like that, so that's good."
Barnes was ejected from the game, while Carter was given a technical foul along with Thabeet and O.J. Mayo of the Grizzlies.
"I let my temper get out of control," Barnes said. "I pushed him and that was the wrong thing to do. I apologized to my teammates for letting my temper get out of control. I am glad we got the win."
Two free throws from Marcus Williams trimmed Memphis' deficit to 75-71 in the opening minute of the fourth quarter. Mickael Pietrus nailed a three-pointer to stem the tide and the Magic built an 86-76 cushion following a dunk from Marcin Gortat with 7:22 left.
"We went through a transition where we couldn't score," Gay said. "They kept coming down and hitting threes and making baskets. They had a lot of presence out in the paint and made it tough for us."
Orlando built an early 16-6 lead and was ahead 32-24 after the opening quarter. The Magic scored 13 in a row during the second for a 50-36 cushion. It was 54-46 at the half.
The Grizzlies came back by scoring 11 in a row during the third for a 63-58 edge as Randolph capped the burst with a pair of free throws. But the see-saw battle continued as the Magic netted the final seven of the quarter for a 75-69 edge.
Rudy Gay scored 18 and Mayo 17 for the Grizzlies, who split the season series with the Magic. Memphis won the other meeting, 99-94, on January 25...Dwight Howard had eight points, 11 rebounds and five blocks for the Magic.
