NBA Game Summary - LA Clippers at Denver

(Thursday, January 21st)

Final Score: Denver 105, LA Clippers 85

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points with 10 rebounds, as Denver blasted the Los Angeles Clippers, 105-85 , behind a large second half.

Chauncey Billups added 20 points and six assists, Kenyon Martin donated 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds and Nene notched 12 points. Ty Lawson added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists off the bench. The red-hot Nuggets have won five straight and kicked off a three-game homestand in style.

Craig Smith led the Clippers with 21 points and six rebounds off the bench. Chris Kaman added 18 points for Los Angeles, which began an eight-game road trip with its eighth consecutive loss as the guest. Los Angeles hopes to improve on its 5-14 road record on the season-long excursion.

The two teams played a very even first half with a tied game at 24-24 after one period and the Clippers holding a slim 48-47 advantage after 24 minutes of game action.

Denver then turned it up on both ends of the floor in the decisive third stanza. The Nuggets reeled off the first seven points on the quarter with Anthony's step-back three opening a 54-48 margin. After a Kaman layup closed the scoreless streak for the visitors, Denver embarked on an 11-4 stretch to push the lead to double figures.

"I knew guys were tired out there in the first half," Anthony said. "We had to find it from somewhere. That first five minutes of the third quarter we found energy from somewhere and that opened up the game."

Arron Afflalo's trey gave the home team a 65-54 edge not even four minutes in. Denver scored one more point in the period's first four minutes than the Clippers did over the entire 12-minute stretch. Billups hit back-to-back threes several minutes later to open up a 76-57 margin, and the advantage pushed over 20 points at 78-57 on two Anthony free throws moments later.

"We didn't make good decisions on some of our shot selection," Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy said. "When we should have passed we didn't pass. We got them out into the open court, where they're just a killer team."

The Clippers trailed 81-65 after the third period, scoring just 17 points and seeing a one-point edge transform into a large deficit. Denver staved off any Clippers comeback throughout the fourth period.
