NBA Game Summary - New Orleans at Memphis

(Friday, April 2nd)

Final Score: Memphis 107, New Orleans 96

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - O.J. Mayo scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down five rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies kept their slim playoff hopes alive with a 107-96 victory over the New Orleans Hornets.

Rudy Gay added 20 points and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who snapped a three-game skid and remain seven games back of San Antonio for the last postseason spot in the Western Conference. Memphis, which would have been eliminated from playoff contention with a loss, has seven games left on its schedule.

Sam Young donated 19 points and seven rebounds off the bench, while Mike Conley chipped in 15 points and six boards for the victors.

"We've put in too much work this season to not have a winning season," Mayo said. "We want to start something right here this year and carry it over to next year."

Marcus Thornton finished with 19 points and five rebounds for the Hornets, who have dropped two in a row. Chris Paul tallied 16 points and eight assists, while Darren Collison had 15 points off the bench in defeat.

The Grizzlies led 25-20 after 12 minutes of action and started the second quarter on a 10-2 run to create some breathing room. Young had six points during the surge, including a pair of free throws to make it a 35-22 contest 2 1/2 minutes in.

Memphis used a 14-2 burst later in the period to build a 20-point lead. Mayo made two three-pointers during the flurry, which Zach Randolph capped with a deuce to make it 59-39 with under two minutes remaining in the first half.

"The second quarter really hurt us. They were scoring left and right," Paul said.

David West's three-point play had New Orleans within eight, 75-67, with less than three minutes left in the third. But the Grizzlies fought back with eight straight points to extend their margin to 16 at 83-67. The score was 86-71 heading to the fourth.

The Hornets never got closer than nine in the final frame.
