NBA Game Summary - Orlando at LA Lakers
(Monday, January 18th)
Final Score: LA Lakers 98, Orlando 92
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Shannon Brown and Jordan Farmar led a late charge and the Lakers opened the fourth quarter with 15 straight points to beat Orlando, 98-92, in a rematch of last season's NBA Finals.
Brown and Farmar both scored nine in the last quarter. Brown finished with a career-high 22 points and Farmar 11 on what was an off-night for superstar Kobe Bryant. He had just 11 points on 4-of-19 shooting.
"I have to continue to get better," Brown said. "Everything worked out tonight. My teammates found me."
This was the first time the two teams met since the Lakers topped the Magic in five games last season to win their 15th NBA title in franchise history.
Pau Gasol had 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who have won 18 of their last 19 home games. They've captured three in a row overall and now embark on eight-game road trip, starting with a big matchup against LeBron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday.
Ron Artest and Derek Fisher each scored 10, while Lamar Odom registered nine points and 16 rebounds for the Lakers, who are 23-3 at home this season and hold the best mark in the NBA at 32-9.
Dwight Howard scored 24 and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Magic, who lost for the seventh time in nine contests.
"The Lakers' 15-0 to start the fourth...you can't do that," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "Their bench outplayed our bench. Shannon Brown was great. Our problem is we're too streaky."
It was a turn of shifting momentum in the second half that turned this game around.
The Lakers were up 56-47 less than two minutes into the third, but the Magic then embarked on a dominating 20-2 spurt. Back-to-back three-pointers from Rashard Lewis and Mickael Pietrus capped the burst, but the Lakers got back within 68-64 moving to the fourth.
The Lakers were shot 5-of-22 in that third quarter, but were able to force seven turnovers in the fourth, leading to 11 points that ultimately was the difference.
Farmar's three-pointer gave LA a 71-68 lead with 9 1/2 minutes left and Gasol's jumper culminated the burst for a 79-68 cushion two minutes later.
The Magic trimmed the deficit to 83-78 following a Howard hook shot with four minutes to go, but LA pumped up the lead back to 10 at 91-81 on a Gasol jump hook with less than two minutes remaining.
LA held a 33-25 lead after one quarter and was up 52-47 at the half.
The Magic return home to face Indiana on Wednesday...Lewis scored 18, while Matt Barnes and Jameer Nelson each had 13. Nelson also had eight assists...Orlando went 11-of-33 from three-point range...The Lakers tied a season-low with seven turnovers...Brown went 8-for-12 from the field, equaling his career-high in shots made.
