NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Washington

(Wednesday, February 24th)

Final Score: Memphis 99, Washington 94

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph was at the head of a balanced attack with 22 points and nine rebounds, as the Grizzlies topped the Wizards, 99-94, at the Verizon Center.

Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol each added 20 points and seven boards for Memphis, which was sunk by the return of Kobe Bryant Tuesday in a 99-98 home loss to the Lakers decided by Bryant's three-pointer with 4.3 seconds remaining.

O.J. Mayo ended with 17 points, eight assists and contributed nine points to a game-changing 23-8 run to begin the fourth quarter in what had been a one- point game.

The Grizzlies have rebounded somewhat from a five-game losing streak with three wins in the last five games.

Andray Blatche continued his steady play of late with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists for Washington, which had rattled off three wins over its previous four games since re-shaping the roster at the trade deadline

Al Thornton contributed 16 points and 11 rebounds in the Wizards' first game since losing fellow newcomer Josh Howard to a season-ending torn ACL in his left knee suffered during Monday's win over Chicago.

"When you lose a player, everybody has to fill different roles. It puts different pressures on you," said Wizards coach Flip Saunders on adjusting to being without Howard.

Memphis entered the final period nursing a 69-68 lead, but used a majority of the frame to open up a 16-point lead with four minutes left to play.

Mayo ended a quick eight-point burst with a turnaround jumper for starters, then nailed a fadeaway deuce to answer an Earl Boykins bucket and keep things rolling for the Grizz.

Gay ended the elongated run with a jumper and dunk for a commanding 92-76 difference with the clock nearing four minutes.

"When O.J. (Mayo) got hot at the beginning of the fourth quarter, that picked us up," said Gay.

The Wizards made some inroads to the deficit before ripping off eight straight points to get within 98-92 on a Michael Harris layup with 21.3 seconds remaining.

Mayo hit a free throw on the opposite end for a seven-point margin that proved to be too much for Washington to overcome in the end.

The Grizzlies were up 27-23 after the opening 12 minutes, but went into halftime trailing 48-46 thanks to a solid 12-1 Wizards run through the middle stages of the second. A close third quarter resulted in Memphis' one-point edge heading to the fourth.
