NBA Game Summary - Utah at Atlanta
(Friday, December 18th)
Final Score: Atlanta 96, Utah 83
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Josh Smith turned in a solid performance with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks, as the Atlanta Hawks earned a 96-83 win over the Utah Jazz at Philips Arena.
Marvin Williams ended with 15 points, while Joe Johnson and Al Horford each chipped in with 12 points apiece for Atlanta, which has won six straight, including a 110-97 decision over Memphis on Wednesday. The Hawks improved to 12-2 at home this season and are 15-4 since November 7.
"It was a great win tonight," Johnson said. "I don't think we missed a beat. We had great rebounding, played one-on-one defense and got out and running. That's what it's all about. We had a lot of fun tonight."
Andrei Kirilenko had a team-best 13 points to go with six rebounds and six assists for the Jazz, who were unable to feed off a 108-92 win over New Jersey on Wednesday and had won three of four coming in. Wesley Matthews and Eric Maynor each ended with 11 points each.
"They just got us early," Utah head coach Jerry Sloan said. "They were terrific defensively. We had a tough time adjusting to what they were doing defensively. They switched on us. We reacted very poorly and turned the ball over and played right into their hands."
Atlanta was ahead 22-18 after the opening quarter and despite Kirilenko hitting a turnaround jumper in the closing seconds of the half, had a double- digit lead, 44-34, at the break.
It went from bad to worse for the Jazz in the third as Williams scored the final six points of a Hawks' 11-4 run to start the quarter and Atlanta was ahead 55-38 just over two minutes in. Jeff Teague then hit a running jumper with a second left in the third and the Hawks were up by a commanding 81-51 score after three.
The fourth quarter was no contest as the Hawks held a double-figure lead the entire way and the outcome was never in doubt.
Despite the loss, the Jazz have still taken 11 of the past 14 overall matchups between these squads...Carlos Boozer was limited to six points and six rebounds for Utah.
