NBA Game Summary - Phoenix at Portland
(Thursday, December 17th)
Final Score: Portland 105, Phoenix 102
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Jerryd Bayless scored a career-best 29 points and Brandon Roy added 27, as Portland held off Phoenix, 105-102, at the Rose Garden.
LaMarcus Aldridge and Martell Webster each added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Trail Blazers.
Amare Stoudemire led Phoenix with 27 points and 11 rebounds, Grant Hill added 20 points and Steve Nash chipped in with 16 points and 13 assists. Channing Frye added 17 points and six rebounds in defeat.
Two straight transition baskets by Hill opened a 63-51 lead early in the third quarter, and the lead grew to 15 points at 79-64 on another layup on a break by Alando Tucker with just under three minutes remaining in the third period. Phoenix led 81-70 after three stanzas.
The Trail Blazers pulled within five twice, the last time on Steve Blake's trey for an 86-81 game with 8:47 to go in the contest. Bayless' pull-up just before the seven-minute mark cut the deficit to four points at 88-84. A three from Bayless and a baby hook in the lane from Roy almost brought Portland back even, as Phoenix's lead was down to one at 92-91 with just under five minutes left.
Then, the Suns' wheels came off. Roy capped a 10-0 burst to push Portland in front 96-92 with about three minutes to go. After a Hill jumper, Bayless drained another long-distance shot, Roy made one free throw and Webster tipped in Roy's miss on the second for a 102-94 lead, capping a 16-2 stretch in the final period.
"I thought he (Bayless) had a great game. We knew Jerryd could put some points on the board and with all the guys we have out, we need that. He's getting the opportunity to play and he's taking advantage of it," said Portland head coach Nate McMillan.
Nash made things interesting with two threes over a one-minute span, the last bringing the Suns within 102-100 with 33.8 ticks to go. Bayless missed a jumper from the left corner, but Webster flew into the picture to grab a rebound and kicked it out to Bayless, who was fouled and made both for a 104-100 edge with 8.9 seconds to go.
Nash went to the basket and converted a lay-in with 4.6 seconds left. Bayless joined the parade to the foul line with four seconds remaining, and he made 1- of-2 that kept it a one-possession game. Nash didn't get a good look on the final possession, as his three-point attempt hit off the rim and backboard at the horn.
"We didn't do a good job. Our transition defense was atrocious. They played harder then we did in the fourth quarter, and we did a poor job of execution and it cost us the game," said Suns head coach Alvin Gentry.
Portland scored the game's first six points, but Phoenix responded and took a 28-25 edge into the second stanza. The Suns broke a 39-39 tie with an 8-0 burst late in the second period, seizing a 47-39 advantage after Stoudemire's two free throws just prior to the four-minute mark. Phoenix took a 55-48 lead into the locker room.
