NBA Game Summary - New York at Toronto
(Friday, March 5th)
Final Score: Toronto 102, New York 96
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Sonny Weems poured in half of his career-high 20 points in the fourth quarter and pulled down nine rebounds to lead Toronto to a 102-96 win over the New York Knicks.
Jose Calderon also thrived off the bench with 16 points for the Raptors, who snapped a four-game skid and moved to 3-0 this season against the Knicks. Amir Johnson and Jarrett Jack each totaled 14 points, while Hedo Turkoglu added 12 with nine boards.
"Yes, we needed that one for sure after dropping four in a row," Weems said. "I was just trying to be aggressive, going to the hoop."
The Raptors won despite playing without leading scorer Chris Bosh, who was out due to flu-like symptoms.
David Lee posted 23 points and 18 rebounds for the Knicks, who went just 3-of-16 from three-point range. Wilson Chandler had 18 points in a reserve role for New York, which lost for the 11th time in 13 games.
Toronto didn't commit a turnover in the final quarter and built a nine-point lead before holding on in the latter stages.
A jumper by Weems extended the lead to 92-83 at the midway point of the period.
New York came back with the ensuing seven points, the final five by Danilo Gallinari. The Knicks were within 98-94 with 2:20 left on another Gallinari bucket, but Andrea Bargnani hit a big shot from the right baseline with 1 1/2 minutes left to help seal the win.
"They made some shots down at the end and we didn't," Lee said. "Bargnani hit that one late. We just didn't play well in the fourth quarter. As good as they are at home and without Bosh in the lineup, we should have beaten them tonight."
Toronto led 31-24 after one quarter and held a precarious 53-52 edge at the half. It remained tight throughout the third with the host team again holding a one-point lead, 78-77, moving to the fourth.
DeMar DeRozan had 10 points for Toronto...Tracy McGrady and Gallinari each scored 13 for the Knicks...Toronto converted 14 New York turnovers into 20 points...Hockey Hall of Famer Wayne Gretzky attended the game and received a Raptors jersey.
