NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Charlotte
(Saturday, January 9th)
Final Score: Charlotte 89, Memphis 87
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Gerald Wallace tipped in Raymond Felton's airball just before the final buzzer sounded, giving Charlotte a thrilling 89-87 victory over Memphis.
After O.J. Mayo hit the tying three-pointer with 8.8 seconds left, Felton took his defender off the dribble on the right wing. His fallaway from the baseline didn't touch iron, but Wallace rose from the other side for the putback to give the Bobcats their fourth win in five games.
"He played great. He obviously made a tremendous play," Bobcats head coach Larry Brown said of Wallace's heroics. "We talked about him being on the weak side board, but we never thought it would end up like that."
Wallace ended with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Felton and Stephen Jackson added 19 and 15 points, respectively, in the win. Flip Murray scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for the victors.
Mayo, who hit a game-winner against Utah in the final seconds on Friday, ended with 25 points. Zach Randolph logged 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Rudy Gay chipped in 15 and 10 in the loss, the Grizzlies' second in three games.
Murray scored 12 points in a four-minute span in the fourth, as his consecutive three-pointers gave Charlotte an 83-78 edge with 4:35 left.
Memphis responded with six straight points, but Charlotte's Boris Diaw answered Marc Gasol's go-ahead dunk with a layup. After a Memphis shot clock violation, Felton's floater gave the Bobcats an 87-84 lead with 1:36 to play.
Unsuccessful possessions for both clubs ensued, and Felton missed two critical free throws with 14.8 ticks to go. Mayo then hit a tying three from the top of the key with 8.8 seconds on the clock, and Charlotte called timeout to draw up the eventual winning play.
Charlotte led 25-21 after one, but the Grizzlies embarked on a 23-4 run in the second frame to jump in front.
The Bobcats had the deficit down to eight before Gay's tip-in at the buzzer resulted in a 52-42 contest.
Memphis continued to play front-runner in the third, though Charlotte scored eight of the final nine points of the frame to pull within 68-64.
