NBA Game Summary - Washington at Atlanta
(Friday, October 30th)
Final Score: Atlanta 100, Washington 89
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Josh Smith poured in 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as the Atlanta Hawks handled the Washington Wizards, 100-89, in a battle between these two Southeast Division foes at Philips Arena.
Smith also had two blocks in the game to become the youngest player in NBA history with 900 blocks. Joe Johnson added 17 points, six assists, and five rebounds for the Hawks, who kicked off their season with a 120-109 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday.
"I wasn't thinking about it. I was just thinking about getting a win. Any individual accolades can wait," Smith said of his accomplishment.
Jamal Crawford ended with 16 points off the bench. Marvin Williams chipped in with 10 points and nine boards, while Al Horford tallied 10 points and 12 rebounds for Atlanta, which has won six in a row against Washington.
"We scored the ball very well in the first half, but I knew they would make a run in the second half," Atlanta head coach Mike Woodson said. "I thought Marvin (Williams) had a huge fourth quarter for us."
Gilbert Arenas had 23 points and four assists for the Wizards, who started the season with a 102-91 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday. Brendan Haywood finished with 19 points and nine rebounds. Andray Blatche had 13 points and six rebounds off the bench for Washington, which hasn't beat the Hawks since January 11, 2008.
"The problem was we let them get up by too many. We played too well to let them have the lead at the end of the first quarter. That's what happens when you're trying to find your identity out there," Haywood said.
The Hawks scored the final nine points of the first quarter to take a 29-24 lead after 12 minutes of play.
Ahead by three early in the second, Atlanta ripped off six consecutive points to build a 37-28 margin. Johnson's fadeaway jumper capped the flurry with about nine minutes remaining.
The Hawks led 58-44 at the half, thanks to an 11-2 run to finish the second period. Horford's pair of free throws and hook shot topped off the spurt.
Trailing 65-50, the Wizards scored seven straight points to cut the deficit to eight. JaVale McGee's alley-oop jam off a Randy Foye pass capped off the flurry with 4:15 left in the third. Atlanta maintained a 75-66 margin heading into the fourth.
Ahead 87-78 with under 6 1/2 minutes to play, the Hawks tallied six consecutive points to build a comfortable 15-point lead.
Washington never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
