NBA Game Summary - Dallas at Memphis
(Friday, April 3rd)
Final Score: Memphis 107, Dallas 102
Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds, as the Memphis Grizzlies pulled away for a 107-102 win over the Dallas Mavericks.
Mike Conley added 25 points and five assists for Memphis, which has won three in a row. The Grizzlies have won four of their last five, following a period in which they had two victories in 19 contests.
O.J. Mayo had 19 points and nine boards in the win.
"Big win," Conley said. "It might not mean anything for us this year for playoffs or anything like that, but it really helps for our momentum going into next season and the end of this year, because this is a playoff team we were playing against and they're very good, very talented."
Dirk Nowitzki had 35 points and nine rebounds for Dallas, which is trying to hold onto the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Mavericks' lead over ninth-place Phoenix fell to three games, as the Suns defeated Sacramento in one of Friday's late games. Jason Terry scored 16 points in the loss, as the Mavs had a two-game win streak snapped.
"It's just frustrating, we couldn't really stop them," Nowitzki said. "(We) let Memphis shoot, I don't know, 54 percent. That's just not a good defensive effort. Obviously, it puts a lot of pressure on our offense. If we can't guard them, we can't get stops."
With the score tied at 97 late in the final quarter, Mayo drilled a three- pointer with under two minutes to go to give Memphis the edge down the stretch. After a Nowitzki miss, Mayo sank a jumper in the lane for a 102-97 lead with just over a minute left.
Each team recorded a miss on its next possession, but Terry drew contact on a drive and went to the line with 39.5 seconds left. He made both free throws to make it a one-possession game.
Conley was fouled with 35.6 ticks remaining, and he made the second for a four-point Grizzlies lead. Terry was well off the mark on a deep three-point game at the other end, and Gay sank two free throws with 23.8 seconds left to help seal the win.
The Mavericks led by eight late in the first quarter, but Marko Jaric's basket and Hakim Warrick's free throw brought Memphis within 32-27 heading into the second quarter.
Dallas, though, continued to lead in the second stanza and again went up eight, on a Jason Kidd jumper with four minutes left. But Memphis scored the next five points, getting within 54-51 on a Jaric free throw with under three minutes to go.
The teams traded baskets, and a jumper from the Grizzlies' Marc Gasol in the final seconds tied the game, 61-61, at the break.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Mavs led 85-84, and the teams swapped baskets and the lead in the early parts of the fourth. Consecutive buckets from Conley and Mayo near the midpoint gave the Grizzlies a three- point edge, but Terry's basket and Nowitzki's subsequent free throw made it a 97-97 game with just over three minutes left.
Erick Dampier, Brandon Bass and Jose Barea each scored 10 points for Dallas, while Kidd finished with nine points, 10 assists and five boards...Gasol added 13 points and nine rebounds for Memphis, while Jaric had 10 points...The teams split the four-game season series, with each team winning twice at home.
