NBA Game Summary - Toronto at Orlando
(Wednesday, April 1st)
Final Score: Toronto 99, Orlando 95
Orlando, FL (Sports Network) - Chris Bosh recorded 24 points and 12 rebounds and hit a big jumper down the stretch to lead Toronto to an unlikely 99-95 victory over the Southeast Division champion Orlando Magic.
Jose Calderon added 21 points and eight assists, and Shawn Marion chipped in 17 points, 15 boards and six helpers for the Raptors, who have reeled off a season-high five straight wins despite being virtually eliminated from the Eastern Conference playoff race.
"It is a great feeling," Marion said of the win. "We are taking it one game at a time. We are playing great defense. This is a great roll for us and we have to keep moving forward."
Dwight Howard's 30-point, nine-rebound effort wasn't enough for the Magic, who had their six-game winning streak halted while perhaps looking forward to Friday's meeting with the East-leading Cavaliers in Cleveland. With the loss, Orlando now sits six back of the top spot and one game behind No. 2 seed Boston with eight games to play.
"We've got a real tough stretch coming up here, and if we continue to play like this it can get real ugly right now, with Cleveland, at Atlanta, at Houston," Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy said. "So hopefully it'll serve as a wake-up call and we'll come back with a lot more."
Hedo Turkoglu ended with 19 points, six assists and five caroms, while Rashard Lewis scored 18 but missed a potential tying three-pointer late in the game.
The Raptors reverted to their turnover-prone ways after leading by seven at the end of three solid quarters. Turkoglu scored six straight to pull the Magic within three early in the fourth, and Lewis' three-ball made it a one- point game, 90-89, with 3:15 to go.
It was still a one-point Toronto lead coming down the stretch, and Bosh extended it to three with a deep jumper over Howard with 23.6 seconds left.
Lewis was somehow left open on the left wing for a potential tying trey on the next possession, but his effort was off the mark. Marion proceeded to miss two straight at the foul line, but Toronto managed to get the rebound on his second miss.
Joey Graham then went 1-for-2 at the line to make it a four-point affair with 5.2 ticks remaining to seal the impressive win.
The clubs played virtually even in the first half, with Toronto holding a 32-28 lead after the first and a 53-52 edge at the break.
The Magic went ahead, 66-65, after Lewis sank a three with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the third, but Calderon owned the rest of the frame.
The native of Spain scored 11 points during a 15-3 Raptors run and added an assist on a Marion dunk, helping the visitors take an 80-73 lead with one quarter to play.
The Raptors, who split the season series with Orlando, 2-2, had dropped six straight as the visitor...Orlando hit just 7-of-26 from three-point land and 26-of-41 from the foul line, including a 10-of-21 mark from Howard...Toronto committed seven of its 16 turnovers in the fourth quarter...Andrea Bargnani had 16 points for the Raptors, who won the battle on the glass, 49-35...Rafer Alston ended with 12 points in the loss.
