NBA Game Summary - Sacramento at Atlanta
(Tuesday, March 17th)
Final Score: Atlanta 119, Sacramento 97
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Al Horford scored a team-high 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out six assists as the Atlanta Hawks routed the Sacramento Kings, 119-97, at Philips Arena.
Josh Smith went for 21 points and 10 boards, while Joe Johnson donated 20 points for Atlanta, which has won six straight, including a 98-80 drubbing of Portland on Sunday. The Hawks are perfect on their seven-game homestand, which concludes on Thursday against Dallas.
"No doubt about it, I was looking at that (triple-double), but it wasn't meant to be tonight," Horford said. "But it was definetely nice to get the win. We knew it was going to be our game. Obviously they weren't making shots and we are playing really well."
Mike Bibby registered 18 points to go along with seven assists and five rebounds in the victory.
Kevin Martin led all scorers with 31 points for the Kings, who have dropped four in a row. Jason Thompson finished with 13 points and eight boards, while Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, in defeat. Sacramento fell to 0-27 against Eastern Conference opponents this season.
"In the fourth we stopped playing together. That's what happens when you play selfish basketball," Martin said. "Hopefully we learned a little lesson tonight. They were aggressive from the start. Horford was a load tonight."
With the Kings holding a 31-26 lead after one quarter, the Hawks regrouped in the second and got a pair of free throws from Zaza Pachulia and a Horford layup to grab at 46-43 advantage near the midway point.
Atlanta then used a mini 7-2 run to close out the half and take a 68-59 edge into the break.
In the third quarter, the Hawks built their lead to double-digits following a layup by Maurice Evans 4 1/2 minutes in. Sacramento, though, was able to keep things close and, after a 1-of-2 effort from Martin at the line, a Thompson putback got the Kings within an 88-86 margin with 1:24 left in the period.
Johnson's jumper and Flip Murray's jam in the last minute gave the Hawks a six-point advantage after three quarters of play.
Horford's two at the line and seven in a row from Johnson padded the Hawks margin to double-figures once again, this time at 101-88 three minutes into the fourth quarter.
Sacramento continued its cold shooting from the field the rest of the way and the hosts cruised to the easy win.
Sacramento visits Charlotte on Wednesday...Evans finished with 12 points...Atlanta improved to 26-7 at home this season, while the Kings fell to a woeful 4-30 as the visitor....Nocioni left late in the game with a right quad injury and did not return...The Hawks are now 13-4 in the last 17 contests versus Sacramento.
