Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - David West tied a career-high with 40 points -- scoring 27 in the second half -- as the New Orleans Hornets snapped the Los Angeles Lakers' 15-game home winning streak with a 116-105 victory at Staples Center.
West added 11 rebounds and Chris Paul notched 32 points and 15 assists for the Hornets, who have won five of six. Tyson Chandler chipped in 12 points and eight boards, while Rasual Butler totaled 10 and six.
Kobe Bryant poured in 39 points and doled out seven assists for the Lakers, who saw their six-game win streak overall also end. Derek Fisher had 19 points and Pau Gasol 10 with eight boards.
Lakers forward Lamar Odom hyper-extended his right knee in the second quarter and did not return.
Down by five points with about 8 1/2 minutes left in fourth quarter, West's step-back jumper sparked a 15-0 New Orleans run that gave the Hornets control of the game.
"We had to pick it up defensively," said Hornets head coach Byron Scott. "We got some great performances...we have matured a lot since out last meeting."
West totaled nine points on the surge and closed it out with a 14-foot jumper just past the five-minute mark, which gave the visitors a 109-99 lead.
"I wanted to come out and be aggressive," said West. "Luckily we got some stops at the end...we know we can play with anybody."
New Orleans cruised the rest of the way and closed out the contest on a 22-6 run overall. Bryant had just two points in the fourth.
The Hornets led 32-26 after the first quarter and were up 61-56 at the half.
The teams battled in the third quarter and four points from Gasol closed out a 9-0 run that gave the Lakers an 89-83 lead.
Two free throws from Chandler cut it to 92-89 heading into the final 12 minutes.
LA made a season-high 16 three-pointers...Bryant tied a season-high with 14 field goals (14-of-22)...The Lakers closed out a five-game homestand at 4-1...The Lakers are now 27-6 this season including an 18-2 mark on their home floor...The Lakers haven't won 16 in a row at home since a 17-game run in 1988-89. The franchise record is 21 straight home victories during the 1976-77 campaign...The Hornets improved to 2-1 on a four-game road swing. New Orleans is 10-6 as the visitor this season and will finish its trek in Utah Wednesday...The Lakers had won three straight over the Hornets, including a pair of triumphs in New Orleans earlier this season.
