NBA Game Summary - Denver at Sacramento
(Sunday, March 8th)
Final Score: Sacramento 114, Denver 106
Sacramento, CA (Sports Network) - Kevin Martin recorded 26 points, seven rebounds and eight assists, leading the Sacramento Kings past the Denver Nuggets, 114-106, at ARCO Arena.
Martin went 5-for-7 from three-point range for the Kings, who won for just the fourth time in their last 23 games. Andres Nocioni scored 23 points, while Spencer Hawes had 20 points and eight rebounds.
Francisco Garcia tallied 19 points, while Bobby Jackson had 10 in the win.
"We started really well and we played much better on defense," said Nocioni. "I thought we played much better today and the effort was there. The energy was great and that is the reason why we won."
Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 32 points to go with seven rebounds for the Nuggets, who have lost six straight on the road. Chauncey Billups had 22 points and eight assists, while J.R. Smith had 19 points. Nene provided 14 points and nine boards in a losing effort.
Hawes' 11 first-quarter points put Sacramento ahead, 35-25, after the opening period, and the Kings increased their lead to 55-40 at halftime.
"It was a bad first quarter, a disappointing first quarter," said Billups. "To come out like that, knowing the importance of this game, is disheartening. We got back in the game several times. But we just couldn't maintain it. You get down like that and you have to play nearly perfect basketball to win the game."
Anthony's dunk in the early minutes of the third brought the Nuggets to within 63-56, but the Kings responded with a 13-3 burst, as Hawes' slam with six minutes left made it 76-59.
Sacramento carried a 10-point lead to the fourth. Denver cut the deficit to six with two minutes to play on an Anthony layup, but Garcia's jumper with 1:17 left made it a nine-point game, and the Kings cruised down the stretch.
Denver still leads the season series, 2-1...Sacramento improved to 10-21 at home, while the Nuggets fell to 17-17 on the road...Kenyon Martin (back) and Anthony Carter (hip) sat out for Denver.
