NBA Game Summary - Minnesota at Portland
(Saturday, March 7th)
Final Score: Portland 95, Minnesota 93
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Brandon Roy dropped a game-high 31 points and handed out six assists, as the Portland Trail Blazers continued their home success with a 95-93 nail-biter against the Minnesota Timberwolves at the Rose Garden.
LaMarcus Aldridge chipped in 15 points and grabbed a game-best 11 rebounds while Travis Outlaw provided 30-plus strong minutes off the bench with 14 points and nine boards.
Portland won its 11th straight at the Garden where they own a 26-5 record this season. The win kicked off a four-game homestand that will also see visits from the Lakers, Mavericks and Nets. The Blazers won their fourth game in the last five overall.
Ryan Gomes paced the Timberwolves with 28 points and Randy Foye netted 23 as Minnesota failed in its attempt to taste victory for the first time in nine games.
Sebastian Telfair had 18 points and seven assists for the T'Wolves, who fell to 10-21 away from the Target Center this season.
Portland kept its edge in the fourth until Craig Smith's three-point play tied things at 77-all early in the frame. An ensuing 11-2 run lifted the Blazers to an 88-79 advantage with close to 5 1/2 minutes left. Roy carried the surge with six points.
A Telfair three-pointer moments later ignited a 7-0 spurt as Foye and Gomes followed with field goals, cutting the deficit to 90-88.
Following an Outlaw snuff of Foye that would have extended the run, Outlaw ran the floor and skied for a putback slam off a missed Steve Blake triple to provide momentum and a two-possession game with 1:28 to go.
Foye hit two at the line but Roy countered with a running jumper before Gomes silenced the crowd with a three-pointer that made for a 94-93 affair with 10.6 ticks showing.
Roy was fouled but made just 1-of-2 at the line, giving the T'Wolves a chance for the win or tie. They opted for the win but Foye's three-ball from along the left wing clanged iron on the back of the rim and bounced out.
The Trail Blazers went up 26-22 after 12 minutes of play and a Blake three- pointer saw Portland still ahead 37-32 midway through the second.
Minnesota scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 40-39 edge on a jumper by Gomes, whose layup to close the frame brought the T'Wolves within one, 47-46, at the break.
The teams continued to trade the lead over the first half of the third and a pair of Aldridge free throws put Portland up 64-61 with 3:40 to go. A Gomes bank shot tied it at 64 moments later before a trip to the hoop for two by Jerryd Bayless gave the hosts a 71-70 edge heading to the fourth.
