NBA Game Summary - Boston at Portland
(Tuesday, December 30th)
Final Score: Portland 91, Boston 86
Portland, OR (Sports Network) - Steve Blake scored 21 points -- including a 5-of-7 mark from three-point range -- as the Portland Trail Blazers upended the Boston Celtics, 91-86.
LaMarcus Aldridge added 20 points and seven rebounds for the Blazers, who have won two straight and five of their last seven overall. Travis Outlaw chipped in 17 points and Greg Oden 13 and 11 boards.
Portland was without the services of guard Brandon Roy, who did not play with a strained right hamstring.
"It feels good (winning without Roy) but hopefully he's going to get back sooner rather than later," said Blake. "I didn't feel it was on me tonight. I just went out and played ball. We have a lot of talented guys that come to play every night and get involved. Tonight wasn't any different. We didn't have one of our main weapons but we had others who stepped up."
Paul Pierce amassed 28 points for the Celtics, who have dropped three of their last four games on the heels of a franchise-record 19-game winning streak. Kevin Garnett added 17 points and eight boards, while Rajon Rondo filled the stat sheet with 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds in defeat.
Aldridge's hook shot gave the Blazers an 83-80 lead with 2:23 left in the game.
Pierce's one-of-two showing from the free throw line made it a two-point game, but Aldridge came through with a fadeaway to make it 85-81 with 59.4 ticks left.
The teams traded baskets and Portland was still up four with 29.4 seconds to go.
Pierce took the inbounds pass and drove the lane, where he notched a layup and was fouled by Oden in the process. He connected on the three-point play to make it 87-86 with 22.6 seconds left.
Sergio Rodriguez was quickly fouled and hit both shots to make it 89-86 with 17.9 seconds showing on the clock.
Eddie House's three-pointer was off the mark and Rudy Fernandez was fouled after the rebound to all but seal the deal.
"We just didn't execute down the stretch, we didn't take care of the ball and we lost our focus," said Rondo.
The Celtics were up 23-13 after the first quarter and led 45-40 at the break.
Blake's three and three-point plays from Joel Przybilla and Oden helped the Blazers tie the game up at 64-64 heading into the final 12 minutes.
Jerryd Bayless hit two free throws before Aldridge nailed a jumper and dunk to give the home team a 70-64 lead with 9:57 left in the game.
Four points from Ray Allen brought the Celts within 70-68 just before the eight-minute mark.
Down by five later in the fourth, Pierce hit a pair of free throws and then added two more to bring Boston within 81-80 with 3:13 left to play.
