NBA Game Summary - Houston at Chicago
(Saturday, February 28th)
Final Score: Chicago 105, Houston 102
Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Derrick Rose scored 22 points and had a hand in Chicago's 17-point fourth-quarter rally, as the Bulls snapped the Houston Rockets' season-high six-game win streak with a 105-102 victory at the United Center.
Rose also filled the stat book with eight rebounds and seven assists for the Bulls, who, despite the win, are still 2-3 over their last five games and 6-6 over their previous 12. Tyrus Thomas added 19 points and nine boards while Ben Gordon gave 16 points in the win.
Joakim Noah chipped in 10 points and 15 rebounds for Chicago, which lost forward Luol Deng to a stress fracture in his right tibia. He is scheduled for an MRI on Monday and the injury is potentially season-ending.
"I had a play in the first half where I jumped up and I felt it," said Deng. "I just wanted to get x-rayed to check on it. The x-ray showed that it might be a possible stress fracture."
Ron Artest poured in 32 points, including a 6-of-12 showing from behind the arc, for the Rockets, who had beaten the Bulls six straight times. Yao Ming had 17 points, seven boards and three blocks in the setback while Luis Scola ended with 16 points and 12 rebounds.
Von Wafer and Kyle Lowry scored 11 and 10, respectively, for the Rockets, who fell to 6-1 without guard Tracy McGrady, who is out for the season due to knee surgery.
Trailing 99-82 late in the fourth, the Bulls embarked on an epic 13-0 run. Gordon sparked the surge with a jumper and a three before Rose poured in six points. Gordon added a pair from the charity stripe to make it 99-95 with 2:39 showing on the clock.
Moments later, Artest interjected with a three, but the Bulls rattled off nine consecutive points to take the lead, 104-102, with 32.1 ticks left. Rose's jumper capped the surge.
Following a timeout, Artest missed a pair of threes from the left wing and John Salmons grabbed the rebound on the latter before getting fouled. He hit 1-of-2 free throws to make it 105-102 and Yao grabbed the rebound off the second and called time with 10.7 seconds remaining.
Houston inbounded the ball but Brad Miller knocked it loose. Artest managed to gain control of the ball but his three-point attempt was blocked by Salmons and Noah grabbed the rebound and ran out the clock.
"I take the blame for the loss," said Artest. "There's things I could've done out there to sustain the lead we had."
The Rockets were up 31-26 after the first quarter and had that lead trimmed to 58-55 at the break.
Five points from Aaron Brooks sparked an 11-3 Houston run that gave the Rockets a 79-64 lead with 3:11 left to play.
The visitors outscored the hosts, 30-16, in the third period to take an 88-71 advantage into the final 12 minutes.
Rose's jumper capped a 9-3 Chicago run that closed it to 91-80 for the Bulls with 9:16 left to play. Rose totaled five points on the burst while Noah and Thomas also had baskets.
