NBA Game Summary - Chicago at Atlanta

(Saturday, December 27th)

Final Score: Atlanta 129, Chicago 117

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Joe Johnson poured in a season-high 41 points and managed to dish out eight assists as the Atlanta Hawks bested the Chicago Bulls, 129-117, in an offensive showcase at Philips Arena.

Johnson, coming off his second career triple-double in the club's last game, sunk 16-for-31 from the field, including 4-for-6 from three-point land, for Atlanta, which is 6-1 during its current eight-game homestand. Josh Smith logged 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win, while Mike Bibby and Marvin Williams chipped in 17 and 16 points, respectively.

"As long as we got the win, I'm satisfied," Johnson said when asked about his output. "Regardless of how many points I score, we've got something we're trying to accomplish here as a team. And this just puts us a little farther ahead."

Ben Gordon nailed six three-pointers en route to a team-high 33 points and Derrick Rose contributed 27 points and seven assists for Chicago, which has dropped seven straight on the road and are 0-3 during a four-game road trip.

The Bulls played without Luol Deng, who rolled his ankle in the club's previous game and is expected to miss a week's worth of action.

Johnson scored seven of the Hawks' first nine points of the fourth quarter, and Smith's straightaway three gave Atlanta a 114-107 advantage with five minutes left in the game.

Andres Nocioni dropped in a layup with just over three minutes remaining to pull the Bulls within 116-112, but Chicago went scoreless over the next two minutes.

During Chicago's drought, Williams recorded a three-point play thanks to a nice dish from Johnson and Smith's slam off an offensive rebound with a minute left put the Hawks up nine, as the hosts sunk their final six free throws to seal the win.

Both teams shot lights out in the first quarter as Gordon's 15 points -- which included a 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc -- paced the Bulls to a 35-32 lead after 12 minutes of nonstop action.

Atlanta's 16-0 run in the second quarter was led by Smith, who had 10 points in the stretch. Smith's three-point play gave the Hawks a 51-41 lead, but six unanswered free throws to end the half had Chicago within 68-63 at halftime.

Both defenses appeared to stay in the locker room at halftime, and Atlanta kept a narrow edge throughout, leading 98-95 heading to the final 12 minutes.

"It's frustrating to not be able to get enough stops," Rose said. "We played so well offensively tonight, but we just couldn't get it going on the defensive end. This is the NBA, so you're going to have to play well on both ends if you're going to be successful."
