NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Atlanta
(Sunday, December 21st)
Final Score: Atlanta 85, Detroit 78
Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Mike Bibby scored a game-high 27 points and Joe Johnson added 19 points and seven assists as the Atlanta Hawks defeated the Detroit Pistons, 85-78, at Philips Arena.
Bibby finished 10-of-13 from the field, including 6-of-6 from three-point territory, while Al Horford turned in a strong game with 11 points and 11 boards for the Hawks, who have won two straight and five of six.
"The first shot didn't really feel good, but it went in," Bibby said. "That's a good indication the shots taken are going in. The guys were finding me. You have to shoot the shots that are there for you. As long as we are winning it's no big deal who is scoring."
Josh Smith contributed 11 points and eight rebounds and Marvin Williams had nine points and 10 boards in the win.
Rasheed Wallace and Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 20 points apiece, while Richard Hamilton had 16 before being ejected with 1:14 left in the game for arguing a non-call. Allen Iverson contributed 10 points and six assists. Detroit has lost two in a row after winning the previous three.
With the Hawks holding a 52-41 edge after one half, Atlanta came out of the locker room and ran off six straight points to widen its lead. However, the Pistons finished out the third quarter on a 7-2 run and trailed by a 69-63 margin after three quarters.
In the fourth, the hosts continued to keep the Pistons at an arms length and following a Bibby jumper held a 78-72 lead with 5:05 left in the game. Two straight baskets by Wallace got Detroit to within four at 80-76, but another Bibby jumper stretched the Hawks lead to six with 2:06 to play.
Detroit was unable to get any closer and a pair of Johnson free throws with five seconds left accounted for the 85-78 final score.
"They jumped out to a big lead in the second half and scored on the first couple possessions," Iverson said. "We played better defense and got good shots on the offense, but they were just better than us tonight."
With the Pistons ahead 25-22 after one quarter of play, Atlanta opened the second on a 16-4 run behind three three-pointers by Bibby and grabbed a 38-29 lead with 7:19 left in the half.
Both teams traded baskets for the next several minutes and the Hawks got another three from Bibby with 1:48 to go to put the hosts up 51-39. A driving hook shot by Prince with 49 ticks left in the half made it a 52-41 game, which was the score heading into the intermission.
Atlanta will host Oklahoma City on Tuesday night, while Detroit will host Chicago...Despite the setback, the Pistons have won eight of its last 10 meetings with the Hawks.
