NBA Game Summary - Minnesota at Houston
(Saturday, February 7th)
Final Score: Houston 107, Minnesota 90
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Yao Ming's 30 points and six rebounds offset a huge game by Al Jefferson and helped the Houston Rockets pull away for a 107-90 victory over the Timberwolves.
Rafer Alston shot 8-of-10 from the field for 22 points while handing out six assists for Houston, which was coming off a loss to lowly Memphis. Tracy McGrady and Ron Artest chipped in 15 and 14 points, respectively, in the win.
Jefferson was nearly unstoppable while compiling 36 points and 22 rebounds, but despite his efforts Minnesota was outdone on the glass by a 51-39 margin in the club's fifth loss in six games. Randy Foye hit just 3-for-15 in the setback, finishing with 10 points for the T-Wolves.
"We tried to get Al [Jefferson] as much help as we could," Timberwolves head coach Kevin McHale said. "He had his usual game, playing consistently on both ends of the floor. We just need to have better shot selection from other people."
It was a classic tale of two quarters in the first half, with Minnesota speeding out to a 27-20 lead after the first and Houston peddling back to knot the contest at 50 just before the break.
Minnesota held a slim 69-66 lead with three minutes to go in the third, and Alston carried the Rockets into the final stanza, hitting a pair of threes and a fade-away jumper during a 12-2 run to end the frame.
The fourth maintained the same story line with Alston's teammates picking apart the opposing defense for nine of the first ten points of the stanza.
Midway through, Carl Landry, who finished with 10 points, cleaned up an Artest miss with a putback dunk. McGrady's three-pointer on the next possession put Houston ahead, 92-75, and the hosts cruised to the finish line from there.
"It wasn't a good start in the first quarter," Alston said. "As the game progressed we gradually got better defensively and we were able to put them away."
Houston has taken six straight games over the Wolves...Artest also had seven boards and six assists, while Luis Scola recorded a team-high 10 rebounds for Houston...Sebastian Telfair recorded 13 points and nine assists for Minnesota, which also got 12 points out of Ryan Gomes.
