NBA Game Summary - Memphis at Washington

(Monday, February 2nd)

Final Score: Memphis 113, Washington 97

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Rookie O.J. Mayo equaled a career-high with 33 points and Memphis snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 113-97 triumph over the Washington Wizards.

Mayo finished 12-of-22 from the field, and Rudy Gay added 23 points and eight rebounds for the Grizzlies, who posted their first victory since January 4 at home against Dallas. Marc Gasol chipped in 22 points and 11 boards for Memphis, which also attained its first win under new head coach Lionel Hollins, who took over the team on January 25.

"Since Hollins has been with us we've felt very confident," said Mayo. "We finally broke the snide. Hopefully we can make this a turnaround."

Mike Conley had 14 points for the Grizzlies, who made half of their 14 three- point tries to move to 3-18 on the road.

Antawn Jamison had 29 points and 13 rebounds for the Wizards, who have dropped six of their last seven contests. Caron Butler ended with 21 points and nine boards.

"You just have to play 100 percent night in and night out," said Jamison. "We can't just do it one game against the Clippers and the next game have an opportunity to win and come out flat, and not play with any energy."

The teams came into the game with a combined 21-72 record, but Memphis got the best of the Wizards in the pivotal third quarter.

JaVale McGee's dunk moved the Wizards to a 79-75 lead with four minutes remaining in the third, but the Grizzlies ended the period on a 19-2 spurt. Gay had nine of those points, all coming consecutively in the latter stages. His jam made it 92-81 and then Darius Miles' short shot accounted for the difference going to the fourth.

"We got some steals, they got some run-outs and some layups," said Hollins. "We spurted from being two or three points up. The next thing you know, we're up 10 and 11. That was kind of the game."

Washington never got closer than eight points in the fourth.

Memphis led 32-29 after 12 minutes, and the visitors got a three-ball from Conley and a jumper from Gay in the closing seconds of the half for a 61-57 lead.
