(Tuesday, November 11th)
Final Score: Denver 88, Charlotte 80
Charlotte, NC (Sports Network) - Carmelo Anthony scored a game-high 25 points and hauled in six rebounds to lead the Denver Nuggets in an 88-80 victory over the Charlotte Bobcats at Time Warner Cable Arena.
Chauncey Billups added 16 points and five assists for the Nuggets, who have won three straight contests. Renaldo Balkman had 15 points and seven boards, while Anthony Carter gave 10 points and six helpers in the win. Nene ended with 12 points and four blocks.
Jason Richardson, who briefly departed in the first quarter after taking an elbow to the face from Nene, had 23 points for the Bobcats, who have lost two straight and four of their last five. Adam Morrison had 16 points, while Gerald Wallace gave 13 points, seven boards and three steals in defeat.
A Balkman jumper opened an 11-point Denver lead, 75-64, with 9:47 showing on the clock.
Richardson, though, hit a free throw and drained a three before Morrison buried a trey. Following failed possessions by both clubs, Richardson drove down and poured in a reverse layup. Charlotte's nine unanswered points made it 75-73 with 6:17 left in regulation.
Moments later, Nene's dunk and a three-point play from Billups opened an 80-73 Denver lead that sufficed through the final buzzer.
Charlotte jumped out to a 24-18 lead after the first quarter, but Denver trimmed its deficit to 46-42 at the half.
Still down by four about three minutes into the third, the Nuggets used an 11-2 run to take the lead. Billups sparked the run with a pair from the charity stripe and Anthony scored the next nine points to make it 57-52 in Denver's favor with 5:08 remaining in the frame.
"I think that (defense) is what did it," said Anthony. "The first half they were able to get whatever they wanted. Everybody had to come together and play defense."
The Bobcats then pulled within one, 60-59, on a dunk by Wallace, but the Nuggets outscored the home team 11-3 to close out the stanza. The surge gave Denver a 71-62 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes of play.
"It's a little frustrating, we started off pretty good," said Richardson. "We have to find a way to maintain that in the third quarter. That's our weakness now."
